I recently had the opportunity to download the ebook SOMNIUM TENEBRAE, by Doctor Spektor aka Bruce Ballon. Most of us know him through his recent Carcosa Collection initiative, his contributions over the years to various collections, and his informative posts on the Café. This ebook gathers much of his past printed material, and presents it in one collection.
Inside are routines he had published in the Dark Museum Book, Oracle Magazine, Paolo Cavalli's Flytrap Book, the Death Toll spirit bell, and other assorted effects, routines and musings. I have the good fortune to own both the Dark Museum book and the Flytrap manuscript, but never subscribed to Oracle or spent time with the Death Toll. Bruce’s routines are well thought out pieces of theatre. Some routines are based on other people’s secrets. In these cases no propriety secrets are revealed (he doesn't tip the Flytrap), but in these instances Bruce does make the point that you will already have a variation of the requisite techniques in your arsenal. What you are getting is a unique and highly imaginative approach to mentalism. Forget banal and boring routines about dream holidays and celebrities...you get monsters and giant mutant flies. Fun and engaging things for educated audiences. My only critique is that some of the graphics are a little low-res, but the written content is high-res, so it balances out. For Petes sake, he’s even got some "comedic-bizarre-childrens magic" in there...yes, you read that correctly! In an age when small, content-poor ebooks are being created and consumed for high costs, so that their 'authors' can make a buck, this ebook is a welcome change. Not only is there a lot to read, but the profits go to charity. Feel good about yourself and pick it up. Bruce is withdrawing it in a few days, so don't miss out. |

Thanks Lucien!
I shrunk the PDF using PDF-Shrink... maybe the pics got a little blurred - but they are only for effect of breaking up long tracts of text - the darn thing was 26 MB as a PDF and the Shrink turned it to 2 MB Glad you liked it!

Just finished reading Somnium Tenebrae and thoroughly enjoyed it! I do own the Dark Museum book and it was in part from that exposure to Dr Specktor's work that I knew I'd love his other presentations and I wasn't wrong. There is plenty of material in this e-book and none of it is filler. For such a low price and at 150 or so pages I was very happy with the quality and thought that had been put into all these bizarre and mentalism tales.
I was trying to think of something critical to balance things out and the only thing I think anyone might take issue to is that for a few of the routines, a gimmick or secret belonging to another performer has been omitted. This is not necessarily a bad thing though as Lucien points out anyone with even a moderate knowledge of methods can easily substitute a method of their own to s****h an item for instance. Also to make it clear there are many routines in Somnium Tenebrae where the full method is provided if that's what you really need. The standout aspect of this e-book however are the presentations. I highly recommend this and I'm not sure how long it will be available for, so for only $25 and helping a worthy cause, if you have any interest in excellent bizarre and mentalism (often with a darker twist ) routines, then get this while you can. |

I tpp have read this newest offering from B. Conrad Ballon, aka Dr. Spektor.
It was within the " Oracle" that I first encountered his creativity. Wonderful stuff indeed. complete and well thought through. Pure entertainment for your audience. "Somnium Tenebrae is a compilation and expansion of his diverse material. Pure gold committed to a worthwhile cause instead of making profit. Kotah |

Hi all,
Here is a review from the wonderful Robert Neale - one of my heroes in the field... he sent it out into the shadows... and told me I can post it around as I liked... so here it is Bruce Ballon’s e-book, Somnium Tenebrae, is a bizarre treat. What is really bizarre is that it treats us to so very many elements of possible magic. (1) The text is loaded with images appropriate to the themes. (2) The props, when not everyday items, are suggestively powerful in their own right. (3) The presentations reflect typical themes of bizarre magic, but are offered in highly imaginative ways. (4) The mental and spirit effects are fully detailed in a way that gives the reader insight into the author’s understanding of performance, both the benefits and dangers. (5) The dark, heavy themes are wisely accompanied by humor when appropriate. (6) Careful consideration of the performer’s interaction with members of the audience is given as a most needed addition to such material. (7) The author’s style is delightful and entices one into his world in a way that those of us other than Ron Dayton (Kotah wrote the forward) can appreciate. (8) The author likes origami. In sum, I may have been seduced into buying Christopher Taylor’s Death Toll Spirit Bell and have already investigated shrunken heads. Yours, Bob

(Anyhow, we all know that Bruce's stuff rocks -- just not sure what it rocks ) David |

And now I, Joe Nobody, shall agree with the wise Mr. O'Neil on points 1 thru 7, with special note of point # 6, Dr. S's careful consideration of his audience.
On point # 8, however, I must protest and confess--I hate Origami, I lived in Japan as a kid, we had origami classes in school, I couldn't successfully complete one single project, total frustration with it, for this reason I must withhold a small measure of acclaim from the work, just on principle. |
