I have auditions in a week. I need as many tips possible. This will be my first proper show. Any tips on what tricks/methods/jokes to use? There will be other magicians and I want to stand out. Thanks,

How much time allotment do you have? How far away is the audience? What are your strengths? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself first. Then you can look at the effects you have and then be able to determine what best suits these questions.
Good luck, |

How did it go?
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Considering he was asking what tricks to do and the show was in less than a week's time, I'm assuming not that great.

I guess he did a Houdini imitation and simply dissappeared.

So pessimistic, I'm guessing he was swept up by a talent scout in the crowd and is now touring the country.

Very exciting and brave when young people show them skills of magic! Even when it go wrong in the show. Of course first you have to practice.

Oh, the innocence of youth? Before I did my first real show,(I was 13,almost 14)I practiced about 6 months. Not only did I p r a c t I c e the tricks, I r e h e a r s e d the show. Then,I had the chutzpah to approach the Junior High School principal and ask to do an assembly for his students (7th and 8th grade). He was a Boy Scout Leader. He believed in giving kids an opportunity. We charged ten cents admission (October 1945). I made $25. for a 30 minute show. (That would equal about $250 or $300 in today's money!) Looking back, I was grossly overpaid! But, the kids liked it! --And,it started me on a life long profession!
Today, with things like you tube, too many young fellows (and young ladies, too) decide to try out at a talent contest,or worse, actually book a date, without the slightest idea of what they're going to do! An 18 year old young man recently on one of the face book pages wanted to know how to "get" a web site so he can sell his show! The problem is that he doesn't have a show! He mentioned that he had "done" two shows, and they were "freebies". The above paragraph makes me sound like a crabby old man. I'm not.I have, over the years. mentored many young fellows. Many of them, are now working professionals! Others are avid "professional quality" amateurs. But, they didn't come to me with 'an attitude"! If you want to perform in public, YOU MUST PAY YOUR DUES!!! Booking a date before you are 'ready', and doing a lousy job, hurts other performers who give value for the money. Further, it hurts magic in general, in that it makes it difficult to sell magic to talent buyers. I don't want to imply that my first few years of performing were "Las Vegas" quality, but when I was 19,I joined the Navy. My working act was carried in a cigar box sized leather shaving kit. (a 30 minute act) I worked with a couple of "vest pocket" agents in Norfolk. I made enough "on the side" that I never cashed a Navy pay check in 4 years! Four years of salary was deposited in the bank. But that first show at 13 (the one that gave me a start) wasn't just a box of props that I "demonstrated" in front of an audience.
