Hiya Gang!
I've been going through all my old Magic Fridays and came across Episode 6. It's for the Dennis Loomis routine and I still perform it every single gig I do! So, if you haven't seen it, I hope you like it! ~click the pic to watch. PASSWORD: Cup Does anyone else do this one? My best, jamie

Jamie D. Grant's YouTube presentation on the Dennis Loomis Mini Chop Cup solved a problem that had been bugging me for years.
The Chop Cup is one of the most amazing and humorous magic tricks ever invented, but with two drawbacks. First, you have to wear a coat, preferably with spacious pockets. But a coat is too hot to wear in summer, spring, or fall in my part of the world (Arizona and Texas) and tends to look a bit odd if no one else is wearing one (as is usually the case in Arizona and Texas). The second drawback is that the loads take up quite a bit of the precious pocket space that I need for walk-around. And they do tend to bulge unnaturally. Until I saw Jamie's Magic Friday performance on YouTube, I never considered the Mini Chop Cup as an option. I guess I thought that the trick would be unimpressive if the cup and loads were small. But watching Jamie perform the Loomis routine was a real education. The early part of the routine with the little hyperactive ball is humorous and puzzling, and the climactic appearance of the large loads is genuinely jaw-dropping, even though they're only the size of golf balls. After learning the routine I tried it out in walk-around. It knocked out my audiences, just as Jamie said it would. I now use the Mini Chop Cup for most of my performances and save my standard-sized Chop Cup for the rare occasions when I'm doing a parlor show (and only if I can wear a jacket without suffering heat stroke). I will probably eventually buy a Don Alan Mini Cup from RNT2, but right now I'm happy with the wide-mouthed Mini Chop Cup from Ickle Pickle, along with an adjustable strength Chop Cup ball from RNT2. My sincere thanks to Dennis Loomis, Don Alan, and of course Jamie. |

Dear Jim,
Try 'Cup', with a capital 'C'. But the vid is the same one that's on Jamie's Youtube Channel

This is still my favourite routine ever. I was just polishing my chop cups yesterday!

Jamie! I first met Denny when he was about 17. He was working a Blue & Gold Banquet.
We were friends until he died in April 2013. He had a marvelous mind for magic. --and, not just close up and parlor! For a couple seasons, he toured with the illusion show that he bought from Stan Kramien. A magician named Kotkin would phone him from anywhere in the world, to discuss an illusion. His "Doll House" was a masterpiece. We worked together on routines, and I was constantly amazed at his knowledge--and WISDOM! I'm so happy and pleased to hear that his Chop Cup routine is being used regularly.

Where is his chop cup routine detailed? I don't think it was ever released for the general magic public, was it?

I have seen a few videos of folks performing with either Mini or Micro Chop Cups. Oftentimes they call them Mini when the cups are actually Micro. I'm not certain if there is a formal distinction between the two - when I check specs it appears that there's only about an eigth of an inch difference in height and diameter between the two, at least for the ones I have looked up. Does anyone know which Jamie is actually using in the above video: Mini or Micro Chop Cup?
Thanks! Jim |

The title of the booklet was The Dennis Loomis Routine for the James Riser/Dennis Loomis MICRO CHOP CUP and was included with a purchase of the James Riser/Dennis Loomis Micro Chop Cup. I purchased the full set which consisted of a stainless micro cup and a copper micro cup, all of the necessary balls, a micro hip flask, a Devil's Hank and a squash gimmick. Dennis' full routine utilized these additional props. Some time after the initial release of the micro cups, Dennis had made a Gold Micro Chop Cup Set. This came with a gold plated version of the copper micro cup, all of the accessories that were included with the full set, a *knock out* gimmick to show the cup as having no bottom, five gold plated Sacajawea dollar coins (one of them being magnetic with an additional property, so the cup can be used as a coin cup) and a set of balls for Aldo Columbini's Laser Cup routine. All of this enclosed in a nice wooden presentation case. There are only TWELVE of these sets...I am the proud owner of Number Ten. The last time I spoke with Dennis, he told me he had kept two sets. Anyone here the owner of one of the other nine sets out there?

Thanks K! Couldn't ask for better info.
BTW, so the routine Jamie DG performed in the above video was using Micro cups, not Mini? Thanks again! Jim |

I'll just chime in on how great Jamies video of the Loomis routine is. Big inspiration. My magic dealer was out of mini chop cups, so I made my own. It kills every time with both kids and adults. 😊

The cups in Jamie's video ARE Don Alan Mini Chop Cup (not the Micro sized Petite Cup).
However Dennis' routine WAS for a Micro sized cup. Dennis' full routine included juggled the Superballs balls he produced from the cup (and the cup too, I think). Dennis vanished the load balls during the juggling. He vanished the cup a la "the Squash Vanish" technique, hence the inclusion of a hip pocket flask in the original Riser/Loomis kit. |

Thanks Donnie. Great information! I do think that your Don Alan Mini Chop Cup is what I want. You'll see one coming off your shelves later this week.
Thanks! Jim |
