Nothing, Blaine is awesome. Back in the day when Blaine did his Street Magic special forums were rockin' like never before. Mostly by beginners who were seeking out every effect that they saw Blaine perform on TV. After Street Magic I remember seeing hundreds of members online on average. But for most magic is just a passing phase, but sometimes a simple TV show can rejuvenate interest. Before Street Magic made its debut, I was still performing stage magic mostly, and was thinking about moving on to another field due to burn out.
But the show actually changed that by rekindling my interest. Blaine also transcended the art by showcasing the spectator's reactions as opposed to the magician, which was ingenious. The spectator's reactions reminded me why I have done this for so long. It also motivated me to do a lot more close-up work which made traveling a lot easier and lighter. Blaine's next show is in May, and you can only wonder how many others will embark on their own magic journey after seeing it, and maybe even end up here on the Café. Or maybe those who left will get bitten by the magic bug again, and end up back here as some do? I never get tired of seeing Blaine's shows, probably because they inspired me to stick with magic and take it in more directions, which made a huge difference in my career and life. So every time I see one of his shows I get that special feeling again, which in itself is truly "magical". Luckily he seems to be going back to his roots and doing more "street magic" and is supposed to have all new material in May. I am looking forward to it, and even heard that he may be doing some True Astonishment stuff. I doubt as many people will ever be that active as they were back then, but it was a magical time for sure. Blaine's magic is accesible and doable in the real world, and all you need is a "deck of cards" and some spectators that is why it is so interesting. Now as for Siss Angel, oops I mean the "ideological biggot," He is right as far as "what you see is what you get." And when I see (him?) I see a metrosexual reject with outdated 80's rocker hair, who swallows cameras, has a speech impediment, no sleight of hand/closeup ability, and an enormous ego based on nothing more than camera editing, stooges, and cut shots... Are you ready? And I am being polite compared to what I have said in the past about that tool. At least Blaine has some chops and can do sleight of hand. I actually like Blaine and his attitude. Criss only wishes he had a fraction of the sleight of hand ability that Blaine has. But I am sure somehow with his camera crew, that he could at least make it look like he can perform simple switch, instant replay, curly cue, snap change, DL, and a one handed riffle shuffle. I bet Criss throws the deck across the room everytime he tries them and fails. Funny how he says "David who" yet is he tries to be a carbon copy of Blaine, who was the first to place emphasis on the spectator and not the magician. Then millions come out of the woodwork claiming that they already thought of it, Blaine just beat them to it. That is why I like Blaine, he appears to genuinely care about what he is doing, and he smiles and laughs with the crowd, and connects with them like no other performer on TV. Others act like they are magic Gods and that the audience is stupid. Blaine is down to earth and on their side, and shares the experience. He doesn't deny having powers nor does he say that he does. He even said it was "entertainment". But it's best to let them decide. His character is likeable, mystical, and polite. That is genius at work and those who lack magic and life experience do not recognize it.
The great trouble with magicians is the fact that they believe when they have bought a certain trick or piece of apparatus, and know the method or procedure, that they are full-fledged mystifiers. -- Harry Houdini

Couldn't agree more sirbrad! Blaine is an enigma of the magic world, Criss is just a poor knock off with eye liner. I've never respected or even considered Angel a real street magician, or magician at all for that matter. Blaine really makes you 'believe' in the magic, the way he stares at his spectators without blinking once, or just the very monotone of voice he speaks in, sometimes he knows when not to say 'anything' at all, and just lets the magic do the talking. Its like he's not even trying to be cool and mysterious, yet.. he oozes magic from his pours. The man is a living legend, and I would be honored to meet that guy, just once, in person.
