I've met a number of magicians who are also into model railroading. I think this should impress them.

I love this video. I used to have an N scale layout when I was younger.
We have a neighbor up in Seattle who is building a layout in his basement at the moment. Thus far he is two million (you read that right - $2,000,000) in and he still has quite a ways to go before it's complete. 2,000 square feet, 300 cars, 80 locomotives, and the whole thing is run on a giant computer system using about 5 miles of wire. It's insane. We saw it a few weeks ago when I was home. It won't be open to the public but I'll try and upload photos one of these days. It doesn't compare to this setup but it's impressive nonetheless.

If any of you get a chance, it's definitely worth the trip. I go to Hamburg two or three times a year, and I never fail to visitthe place. And yes, I'd make an extra trip to meet a fellow Café member and show him or her around.

I have seen some amazing layouts, but the one in the video blew my mind with some of the features. The jets that "take off" and "land" is just unbelievable.
I too, used to have an N-scale layout. It was 5' x 16' with 4 separate mainlines, that could interact through a common yard. I never quite finished it, but spent many years and $$$ detailing. When I moved, a friend wanted it, so he dismantled the table into 3 large sections. I had already sold the locomotives and rolling stock to a guy in Germany. My late step dad had an HO layout in the basement where I live now. It encompassed the ENTIRE basement!! He had even scratch built a drawbridge that traversed across the main entrance doorway. It raised up so that people could enter the room. A friend of his dismantled it and cleared everything away before I moved here, so I'd have room for my magic collection. He never built anything small I don't think. He and my mom scratch-built a 3-story paddle wheel boat, that is still docked a ways up river from here. And that was after building a smaller 2-story paddle wheel boat!! Stone, I wish I could take up your offer. I'd love to visit Germany one day.

A different neighbor of ours had the same thing, Michael - the bridge that would lift up to get into his basement. It was either an HO or an O scale setup. He had even cut a hole in the wall between two rooms to allow trains to pass through.
My first layout was actually built on top of a door. We attached legs and a drawer to hold the controls and light switches. Nothing overly fancy but my dad and I built the table and my mom and I did the landscaping, built the mountains and water features, etc. I think the construction phase was my favorite part, seeing it all come together. The next time I'm in Germany I'll have to take a visit to this place.

One of the two brothers who started the place has a blog, and my son followed that blog the entire time they were developing the airport. That airport is the product of imagination, dreaming, and trial-and-error technology that I can only compare with Disney. In other words, Miniatur-Wunderland is Disney-level quality. It's like Walt said, "Let's do a model train layout, and make it the best in the world. It's that good. But the reason anyone of you might want to arrange to meet me there is this: there are SECRETS. The last time I went, I paid for a guided, behind-the-scenes tour for my son and me. So I know some things that don't show up on those videos. |
