I admit I wasn't too thrilled with the whole tornado of fire, but I was floored badly by his transporting that guy to Hawaii. I hope I'm not giving anything away, but obviously (I'm guessing) that the Hawaii part was p******d, but I still can't get over his audience selection process on how that all worked out to get the "random" spectators.
Also the vanish was one of the best I have ever seen. I mean it was above the audience, with super thin steel bottom, a mirror, and people on the stage to "watch" the back part. I'm a close-up worker, so illusion is kind of my chance to be a spectator and be fooled (not that I'm not fooled by close-up, because I am that too.) I mean I know a little about mirror techniques, and base techniques from books, but I was just totally baffled. I also saw him vanish random people on a stage in front of me at a live show. These people were really random too. He had a bunch of beach balls going in the audience and who ever had one, when the music stopped they were vanished. This was also the best vanish I have ever seen too. People encircled them, all around, they were like on these steps when they vanished. I must also mention that his assistants went for the ride too. Okay now get this, months later I saw a friend of mine and she happened to be at the show with a friend. It happens her friend was one of those to disappear. I asked, well did she say how it was done? She said that although her friend knew how it was done I guess Copperfield backstage or wherever impressed upon them on how long he worked on the illusion, and to keep it a secret. So my question is, is he really going to vanish random people, letting them on the secret? Possibly the assistant blindfolded them when they were out of audience site, before the actual vanish. By the way the disappearance was a quick one. I also loved the theatrics on how he ended the show. He DIDN'T make them reappear, I mean how ingenious. Also another question, I saw the Pendragons to the same trick with like a dozen show girls on a T.V. special. He made them reappear, however, in the audience afterwords. So the question is, who originally invented this particular illusion? Copperfield or the Pendragons? I saw the Pendragons do it on T.V., I must say before I saw the live Copperfield show. Thanks for clearing me up on these things, I really appreciate it. Ed, (Eddini).

Hey there Ed,
Yes those two illusions DC does are great ones, aren't they? He and his team put a lot of time into designing them, and the story that is told with each one really makes them special. Yes, those chosen for "Thirteen" have a little more insight as to how the illusion might be done, but all in all, they still don't know everything. Which is really cool! And they are told later to keep it a secret—and they do! As for "Portal" what you see is what you get...and if you see it live, it's much better than on the TV show. There really is a satellite hookup, yes all the people chosen really are at random, the Polaroid photo is real, and they do vanish from a crane overhead. Very cool! I urge you to see that one done live—it's magic at its best and there is no way you'll be able to figure out how it's done! --Jack |

Choquette has performed this great illusion for at least four years before selling the exclusive rights to Copperfield. Johnny |

And what about "Voyeaur"? Pure art and magic!
David Copperfield is GOD, and maybe the best magician all over the world, (and I have seen a lot of magicians). All the best magic, Pablo Tejero

I agree, Ed. Both of these illusions are superb. The first time I saw Portal done live I was in shock over how great it was. The television special doesn't do it justice. See it live, it is much more amazing.

I was actually lucky enough to be randomly selected for the "Thirteen" illusion. I can affirm that it was really random. The hilarious thing is that my wife, sitting right next to me, caught a ball bouncing down the aisle so we both went down together! Talk about a Copperfield moment I will never forget.
As unbelievable as this sounds, the next time he came into town he finished with Thirteen again, sure enough I caught ANOTHER BALL. It was completely random but utterly amazing. And yes, those who participated are very informed as to how it works. |

So does that mean you lied when they asked you if you were a magician, Josh?

Uh oh...JAEIII knows the process!
They do ask you if you are a magician, and also I've been told David or his crew "coaches" the spectators on what to say if:

The Copperfield secret I really want to know is how to marry a model. Anyone in on it here? Come on! Just give me a hint!

That's true Macgyver,
After each show the 13 lucky people that vanished stay in the theater, where David will greet them, give them the talk you mentioned, and show the footage of them disappearing so none of them feel they missed anything during the show. He is also very nice to take pictures and sign autographs. When the 13 people walk to the stage, he has two or three assistants that stand by the stairs and ask: Are you a member of the press or are you a magician? If you don't lie and say that you are, you automatically become a witness. Of course if you lie and David finds out, then you loose his respect forever...and they kill you. OK, that last part is not true, but you know David won't be happy with you.

Firedice,
Actually, David wouldn't be able to tell you. He's actually never married one. He just dates them for a long, long, long time.

Both great illusions I agree. Incredible presentations.
However, from the live show I saw I managed to figure out how the vanish in "Portal" was accomplished! A really well thought out technique! Pure Copperfield...

Portal is unbelievable. I saw it live, and it was awesome. That and the Lotto Prediction are my two favorite tricks I have ever seen. Pure magic at its best.
As far as 13 goes, I bet a lot of people don't tell the secret because of their knowledge on it. They know the secret to David Copperfield's grand illusion and their friends don't. Why would you want to lose that? |

I completely agree, this illusion was AWESOME! Seeing it live is just so amazing. I also didn't realize Copperfield was so funny, "It's Copperfield, not cop and feel." I don't know if he used this line in every show, but it was very funny...

I love Copperfield, the Pendragons, etc. But they don't really invent anything. They buy exclusive rights, then add their own brilliant production values to the effects.
It's symbiotic. Ouelett, Steinmeyer, etc., the actual innovators and inventors, don't have the stage presence of a Copperfield or the Pendragons. The Copperfields and Pendragons don't have the technical/engineering/inventive capacities of a Steinmeyer. Only (a relative few) fellow magicians know the names and talents of today's real inventors. And since they don't get much glory, one hopes they're getting lots and lots of money! It's understandable that the original inventors don't receive credit for their effects in the public mind. But today's magicians are not in the same league as those in the past—who actually created many of their own effects and then had them constructed. Then again, yesterday's magicians aren't in the same league as the showmen (and few women) of today. I would love to see Houdini, Thurston, et al., react to Copperfield's show or Siegfried and Roy's or Lance Burton's or Penn and Teller's. |

I still believe the best illusion on that special was Fearson's Laser Sawing.

I went to see Copperfield in Savannah last week. He was great. His best moments were the Lottery, Having a Baby and Portal. The Lottery was my favorite. Probably the best thing I have seen in magic in a long time.
