I apologize if you guys have talked this to death (I did see scattered references around the forum); but the reprint comes off the presses Tuesday and I'm curious about opinions on "Stewart James in Print: The First 50 Years."
Thanks |

I'm not doing a review of this one, it might take years!

I don't need anything THAT thorough, Euan. Something along the lines of your review of "Close-up Card Magic" would be just fine.

I've ordered mine straight away. Only 500 copies being printed this run. I've been looking for this book for years - long out of print!

If you read this book and don't get at least half a dozen great ideas to develop, you are brain dead.

He's wonderful. I think books are the way to go. I don't videos have produced the best magicians. The old time guys ( Even Daryl, etc. ) all learned from books.

Just a little off topic, but Stewart James was one of the most fascinating characters in magic. I understand that the book in question contains info about his life and methods of creating effects. Frankly,I found the 'way' he created almost,if not more interesting than the effects themselves.
I believe that the James book(s) belong on the keeper shelf of every magician. Best thoughts, John Smetana |

I agree to buy since there is only 500 copies being printed. What too long and spend $250 or more on ebay.

Well, thanks for the input, guys. I not only decided to pop for the reprint of Stewart James in Print, but (don't tell my wife) also splurged and bought The James Files. The reason is because -- as more hobbyist than practicing magician -- the part of the artform that most fascinates me is getting inside the workings of the magical mind and, as John Smetana so elegantly states, these books promise to open up the processes of a unique creator and thinker. (If my wife complains, I will -- however -- be blaming you, John. I know she won't, though, because she is the REAL magic in my life.)
They should both be here within a couple weeks, I suppose. In preparation, I'm going to do a little weight training so I'll be able to lift them when they arrive. |

John - you are mistaken I'm afraid! The James File is a 2 volume set of Stewart James' work that was not in print. i.e. unreleased material and other magicians takes on his work. The index that came with the James File covers all 3 volumes though.

Stewart James in Print has been reprinted in 500 copies from Hemetic Press http://www.hermeticpress.com
The cost is a whoping 100 bucks, but its worth every penny.

SJ in Print is the precursor to the James File. Or the James File is the sequel to SJ in print, depedning on how you want to look at it. The James file is sold as a 2-volume set and comes with a separate 3rd book which is the index to all three volumes. There is some outstanding material in these books as well as wonderful historical info, anecdotes, and articles revealing SJ's creative thought process. My highest recommendation!

Has anyone actually received their copy of the reprint yet? Yes, I received mine from Martin Joyal just today as a matter of fact. It's very well done and in an identical format to my edition of The James File, right down to the presence of varnished and non-varnished areas on the dust jacket. The only obvious difference is that the Hermetic Press logo is not on my reprint as it is on The James File. Instead, the spine carries the Jogestja Ltd. logo. It will be some time, however, before I get to this massive book (nearly 1000 numbered pages) since I'm only about 1/4 through The James File at present. |

For my part, I believe that these volumes contain a dizzying numbers of ideas that have not been fully explored as well as a lot of material that could be termed workers. For a Poker savvy audience, Ten Nights in a Cardroom is a slayer. These are that I will never part with. GREAT thread Bob! |
