I just got the pleasure of getting The Card Magic of Nick Trost. Although it was published years ago I KNOW I will find some great material.
Do anyone have trick recommendations? I am really looking forward to the gambling tricks and coincidences sections. Thanks for your help |

This is a GREAT book Brian. I want to beat everyone to the punch and direct you to "Intuition" and "Eight Card Brainwave." These are excellent effects. The Eight Card Brainwave remains in many magicians' repertoires and it has received some cool reworkings by some of the art's top guns. Intuition is simply powerful.
I really don't want to name any others because I do not want to rob you of the joy of discovery. Nick Trost IMHO was a great card man. The fact that he focused more on subtlety over difficult sleight of hand does not diminish his standing alongside the oft named greats of card magic. Nick Trost was a prolific creator of excellent card magic; you have made a wonderful purchase! Ahimsa, Vlad PS: The gambling and coincidence effects are worth serious study |

Uh.. okay. What's wrong with that? I think what L&L is doing is terrific. There are a lot of great books on there that are no longer available. For those of us who like having books on portable devices, this is a great thing.

I guess some of us buy books for more practical reasons.

Sorry, but I don't understand. I buy a book to learn material. Why does it matter if the book is a physical copy or in a digital format? Written information is written information. On an aesthetic level, I love books. But the bottom line is I want to learn material from them. How that information is delivered to me (print or digital) doesn't matter.

At the recent Woody Aragon lecture, he HIGHLY recommended this book and said he has drawn a lot of inspiration and ideas from it.

Well, I suppose if you are a collector, that is one thing. But I wonder if digital copies devalue the hard copy books? I mean, you can read many classic books online. But first editions of For Whom The Bell tolls still go for a lot of money.
I don't know. Have PDFs devalued hard copy magic books? Logically, I don't see why they would. But I know nothing about the collectors market. I would be curious to find out.

Why does one have to be a collector to value a book?

Brianmets5, I did a review on this book a while back and did demos of several effects, which based on your criteria, you might find helpful.

Magicfish, you don't have to be a collector to value a book. I just assumed you were a collector. Obviously I was wrong.
Not that you have to answer but I still don't understand why digital copies are an issue with you. I mean, obviously they don't suit you. Fine. But why the negativity? Do they somehow impede your enjoyment of your books? People watch movies on their iPhones. I would never watch a movie on an iPhone. But I don't begrudge those who like to do so. It's simply a choice. I love the magic books on my shelf. I really do. I'm not precious with them, though, nor any other book. I don't abuse them but I don't give them special treatment either. But I also like PDFs. Convenient for me to read when I'm on the road. I don't know. I'm just curious.

Thanks, Tyler! About my lengthy delay, I moved to a new house about 3 weeks ago so I'm still awash in boxes as I continue to unpack. Once I get the new recording space ready I'll finish off two more book reviews which are all done except for one additional demo each.

Cameron. You seem to think that one must be a collector if he treats his books with great care. This is not necessarily so. My books are all in pristine condition. I hold them in my hands. I treasure them as fine objects. It doesn't mean I'm a collector.

Right, I know. I got that. I was simply asking why you were negative toward digital downloads, that's all.

Because I cant hold a PDF, I cant feel its weight, or caress its spine. I am a bibliophile you see.
