Hi guys and gals,
As most here will know I perform the sj escape quite a bit. I've got a new two-man show and I'm looking for a version of the sj that could pass as a medieval restraint. I'm not really that bothered if its historically accurate. I just want it to look old and pass as if it could've been used back then. To get a feel of the show click here for the show's poster. I hope you like it. Cheers, Ros

If I recall correctly, SJs were invented near Marseilles, in the early 1600s. It's accurate if you say it is.

Hmm, can't help you with the jacket, but I am wondering... don't you two live like 4000 miles apart? Where is this show happening?

LOL.... I wish I was performing with "our" Harley. Now that would be a learning experience and a half!!
Although the Harley I've teamed up with does work as a clown too. Hmmmm.... spooky!

I can count on one hand how many clown shows I've done in the last ten years. Once, it seemed less lucrative, so I drifted away from it. But I miss the slapstick, and I'm building a new act from scratch, using another of my long-ago passions...bassoon.
Working with Ros would be a treat.

I would go with something like an Australian/Tom Horn Belt, Trudel Spiderweb or Trudel Torture Harness.

Not sorted the SJ yet.. I like the idea of Tom Horn/Spiderweb/Harness I'll look into those. Used to do Tom Horn years ago but never really got on with it. Maybe I should pay it another visit.
The first outing for Pyrate Circus was a massive success though and is a show we're going to continue to work on.

In your selected time frame, many crazy folks were put on boats, to act as crew. Hence, the term "ship of fools". Perhaps you could find more reference to it, because some would most certainly have required occasional restraint.

Often, lunacy was seen as possession, though over time, it was seen more as a disease. Treatment was far more humane in Islamic areas than in Christian, these being the two major Euro influences of the Middle Ages. (In other places, crazy folks were often seen as intermediaries between man and gods.)
Exorcism, confession, music, trepanning, bloodletting, torture, purges, dunking, and whipping were sometime treatments. Chains of iron have long been seen as appropriate for restraining demons. Manacles were also common. For some people, the belief about not suffering a witch to live, was prevalent...demon possession defined the witch. Death was the cure. Some European cities had "witch towers" and "fool towers", as places of incarceration. The earlier asylums tended to be run by monks. State sponsored social services were initiated by Henry VIII of England, who made "natural fools" wards of the state. "Naturals" were the folks we'd now call "insane", "developmentally disabled", or in the sideshow style, "freaks". If you want to do a medieval SJ, it won't be accurate. Here's an article that pictures some of the later developments in treatment. You'll get some interesting ideas from it: http://www.behavioral.net/article/confronting-chaos

Nothing you come up with will be truly "period," but since you're simply going for THE LOOK, you have a great deal of latitude.

Thanks, Dave! I'm a fount of otherwise useless information. The only other profession I could be in, is academia. Fortunately, I'm honest.
