What do you think is the worlds best change bag?
Are any really very deceptive? Ever $50 clown seems to use a red bag with a handle and calls it magic. What do you think is the best if money was not a problem of course? |

It depends what fits you the most. Most magicians just do a single change. Some need a double change instead for their effect. It also depends on the size of the item you want to change/produce/vanish. Their are different size bags out there. The one with the trigger is my favorite. There have been no major complaints on a particular one.

A change bag is just a utility item. You can use the Silk Cabby as well or any any of the different utility props available.
Most overlook the little used Dye Tube in a paper tube, from Rice Silk King Studios. As Mike says, it all depends on what best fits the purpose. |

Seems like every clown in town uses them.
A more deceptive concept would be best. |

The red bag with the round handle didn't seem so weird 50 years ago. Many churches still used collection bags similar in construction to the bag you are describing. Now they seem out of date now and as you say every clown uses them. Wmhegbli has given some great alternatives. I have also seen a baseball cap change bag and several other handleless bags around. You just have to decide what you want to use.

The best one is the one you like to use and perform. We all have different tastes. Personally, I like the Loftus model. It is made just like the old P&L model, and is very classy looking. They are very deceptive, if you don't know the secret. I was totally fooled the 1st time I seen it used in a magic shop. The newer flat wood ring models are easier to work and even more deceptive then the original modus operandi. I just don't like the wood ring opening, my personal opinion. When they are not deceptive is when people try to put an elephant in them, trying to do to much with one prop. You can of course just make a Tarbell Cone from the Tarbell Course. This is very deceptive when made out of newspaper. A double version will expand the possibilities. |

I like the velvet change bags that P&L made and the German imports. Abbott had a large red Change bag without the handle which was the large size I needed for a special effect but their material was not velvet but a plain cloth. It was stiffer than the velvet so it made it a little harder to turn the bag inside out. Although the traditional handle looks odd, at least it moves the hands farther from the bag which I think makes it more deceptive.

Yes, It is red with white plastic rim. They say it is velvet material but it is not soft and pliable like the velvet in the change bags I mentioned. I would have been willing to pay more for a softer velvet. The bag has good capacity and functions otherwise fine.

Actually, I believe they call that material "Velveteen". Velvet is very hard to sew, as it moves and need special tool to hold it in place while sewing.

That Crown Royal bag is a great idea! Fantastic gag for adults!
Anyone own the baseball cap version or the clear bag? |

The clear bag is for mentalist effects where you have a number of say, slips of paper in the bag, and you have a volunteer select the paper pieces out of the bag.
It is not for changing silks of different color or combinations, like for the Mis-Made Flag trick. The Baseball cap has been reviewed on the Café. You bring the sweatband together to effect the change. |

I have the baseball cap, the wood style and the old velvet tote bag. I have not worked with the cap as I bought it on an impulse. The wood ring one is good but I still like the old tote bag. Has always worked for me but as it has already been stated here, it depends on your preference and style. The crown royal bag looks nice but for me would not work well in my kids act. Great thread, lots of good ideas and help.

I bought a cap and was disappointed at first because of the load limitations. But then I thought it through and realized it is a really cool variation that is quite unsuspicious as long as you only want to use silks, cards or other relatively flat items that don't show when the cap is worn. I did a show with a couple of students where one of my rookies used the cap, ventured into the audience, had a volunteer cut up a silk, put it in his hat and he restored it. He had worn the cap the whole show and all the other students wore similar caps, so it didn't look like a magic prop at all. He pulled it off and got some of the biggest applause of the day. I was about to shelve it, but decided to keep in the rotation. I like it and when it fits the setting, I'll wear it. Hope this helps.

The Crown Royal Bag is a good one!
Also, I've mentioned this one, but no one has ever responded about it: http://www.tonychris.com/sealth.html I think this one might be the best. I am going to get one eventually. Doug |
