For example I have frequently made an impromptu double backer in a borrowed deck... Come to think of it Double facers also. I have also made an impromptu forcing deck by faroing the deck with the cards to be forced in the extended pack. Extended only about an eighth of an inch... if that makes sense...

There are a couple ways of having an impromtu duplicate in the deck, basically showing a card but making it look like a different card.

I'm sure at one point in his life, Vernon used to wear a vest full of DBers that matched different popular deck designs. DBers, DFers and thick cards are all possible. I've used blue tack to do this on the fly in the past. Nice thing about using this stuff is that you can cleanly remove it from the cards before you give the pack back.

Really if you think about it a crimped card is the ultimate in impromptu gaffs. Can be done in less than a second, and can be removed without any evidence just as easily, and all under the watchfull eye of the spectator.

True, but in our examples, a crimped card would represent a cornered short.

That would depend on the type of crimp you're using. The infinity crimp for example does not work like a corner short.
One that would qualify as easily made before the performance is the scalloped short card. Pair of sharp scissors and you've got one powerful tool. I've nailed magicians using one in the deck.
