Hi, I have been using a set of Owens 12 inch hollow rings, and they are great! But they scratch a lot. And now then I do the twisted flower pattern, or take too rings, press them together and move them back and fourth, there is a lot of friction between them now, and they grind. Like grinding your teeth.
Is this Normal?! Please help |

The surface of the Owen Magic Supreme rings should be smooth like glass. If they are irregular or rough to the touch, there is something wrong and they should be returned for exchange. Contact Alan at alanz@owenmagic.com

I had a friend who had the hollow stainless steel Owen's Rings, and they were not shiny at all. More like they were brushed and dull looking. This was in the early 1970's, then he got another set, same thing in the 1980's.
They do make chromed sets as well. Owen's do not guarantee their products, so I have no suggestions for the original poster. Seems strange that steel would scratch very easily. The grinding noise kind of suggest, over enthusiastic handling of the rings. Maybe a lighter touch would help you with your problem. As for the scratches, take the rings to a metal shop and inquire about buffing them up, if they are stainless steel rings. An auto bumper shop can re-chrome them if they are the chromed version. |

Of course this guy only bought the best and had a number of Owen's products. Abbott's, Tannen's, Hank Lee, Morrissey, Rings & Things and Owen's was the only big main magic companies making their own products back then. Suds was a manufacturer, but only made the chrome rings. I believe I vaguely remember Abbott's have stainless rings around that time, but I cannot be certain of it. |

I am 100% sure that they are Owens because I bought them from Owens. But I emailed Jeff McBride ( who told me to buy the rings) and he says and stands behind the fact that scratched rings are normal. I have seen his set and they are fairly scratched and worked in. But if I really want to, I can put some metal polish on the rings. Thank you all for your input.

I just examined my Owen rings and they don't make any grinding noise when rubbed together. I suppose if I look with a magnifier I'll find "scratches" but to the naked eye they are not visible. What concerns me is not the scratches you see but the grinding noise. Either the rings are damaged or your handling technique may be too forceful.

Abbott's did sell stainless hollow rings at one time. They were made by Mid America Magic for Abbott's. I saw them in their shop (Mid America-Delben).

Hi Lary,
When I was working with my rings a few days ago, They were not grinding at all. When I was doing the show though, it was cold out, (outside stage) and the rings were not sliding smoothly. But they they grinding at the time. I will contact Owens and ask them, but as I said, Jeff McBride has had his set at least 10 years, they are very scratched, but very functional. Thanks Elliott |

My Owen rings have normal wear. They are not perfect, but neither is their look objectionable.
Not doubting Bill, but I have never seen a set of matte-finish Owen rings.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Depends on what you call matte-finish. Un-chromed stainless, is somewhat matte.

I bought my 12" hollow linking rings in the late 80's. It took about 1 year to get them, from the time my order was placed, but I'm so glad I have them now. They are fabulous...
Before that, I performed with a set of 13" solid rings, custom made for me by Ron MacMillan. The lighter weight Owen rings are so much more enjoyable to work with...they look and sound just great... |

Yes, my Owen rings are dinged as well, from crash linkings, I suppose. I was surprised the metal would ding on a normal crash linking, as my old 8 inch rings and things set showed less wear until the chrome began to wear off.
But I quit worrying about it and they work fine. Maybe they grind, I don't know. I do know that the key was just cut and a section was not removed as it is slightly larger than the rest, so I suspect even Owen takes short cuts these days. (These rings are about 12 years old, ordered directly from Owen) Marc |

My Owen 12 inch rings that I have had for 20 years are still in very good condition. Minor fine scratches but no nicks or dents. If you are interested in Owen rings get them soon since John Mendoza mentioned in one of his email lists that they may not be in business in the next few years.

Joe Porper's new rings are awesome. Made of space-age alloy, solid, super light and a dream to handle.

I think Pete means to say that the rings are solidly constructed... but they are tubing in material. Let me add that they ring like a bell!

Actually they are not tobing, Porper said they are solid, special hard alloy.

Porper has - kind of - disappeared from the Internet, and his helper has taken over, so is the stuff made by Porper or his assistant/protégé Scott Jenkins?
