I've been in Marine Corps boot camp for the past 3 months, and finally got to touch a deck of cards again.
I recently bought Color Monte, and to be frank, the instructions suck, please could someone give me a better method than the little one piece of pig latin that came with the trick. Thank you lestat_2016@hotmail.com

I know it has sold zillions, but it is not the instructions that suck... IMHO the "TRICK SUCKS."
Learn Twisting the Aces or Ron Bauer's Gypsy Curse if you want a commercial packet trick. Note: Fool the Officers, you'll get a better job in the military. The Sargeants will just give you KP and Guard Duty.

Pete,
I have to agree with you on the instructions to Color Monte being not so clear, but I have to disagree with you saying the trick sucks. I think it's a great routine and I use it every once a while when I'm in the mood for it. It gets great reactions from laymen, especially the ending! Give the trick a try again Pete, you might have second thoughts on it. |

Paul Wilson has a great handling of this effect on one of his DVDs.

First off, LeStat...welcome to the Café...
Secondly, use your position as a member of the Corps to get over to the PX and load up on tactical Bikes! They're lots of fun, and they're cards that few of us civilians get really get our hands on...at least not in any quantity.
Cheers,

First thing, throw out the red and blue diamonds and replace them with two normal cards and work on the patter - it makes it better with good patter.

I'm having difficulty with Color Monte as well. Specifically with step 4. Any help is appreciated.

There is also a video demo at Penguin Magic that might help.

Thanks everyone for the help, and the welcome. I'm not new to magic, but finally getting around to picking up those certain, "must get books" and "must do tricks".
I've got little time, and even less to actually practice, so every waking moment there is a deck of cards or magic in my hands.

Colour Monte is a brilliant effect. Done at fast pace, you will get a fantastic reaction. It is one trick which is fine to bring out as a seperate packet. The cards look good and it does not matter that they are not regular cards as the spectators can handle the cards.
It also does not matter if half way through they suggest you're using sleight of hand, because that is the point of the effect. And ultimately, the climax will blow them away. It's not a best seller because its ****. Let us know which bit of the instructions / routine you are having difficulty with. |

I can't believe there are magicians who don't like Colour Monte?!!? I'm utterly shocked!
I use it often with a Joker, a Jack of Hearts as the money card and the Ace of Spades as the kicker. It NEVER fails to produce AUDIBLE reactions and the best part is that of course they want to examine the cards and of course you can let them! It's like a free ride for card magicians. Consider the pro's: Great Story. Gambling theme. Multi phased. Lots of magic throughout. Kicker ending. Only three cards used. Cards are examinable. ....and so on and so on! I've got to ask, what's not to like??? I'm utterly perplexed!

Color Monte was the best selling packet trick that was put out by Emerson & West. The first time I saw it I was blown away with all the changes . I sometimes will get rid of the $14.00 card and use something else. As for the question you said problems with step #4, that is the alignment move and very easy to do. Follow this with cards in hand, 3 cards facedown, pull back towards youself the top card, now put your thumb on the back part of the card nearest your body (top card), place index finger on top of top card, place second finger on top of second card. Now push both of the cards forward (away from you) while the bottom card remains still on your palm until your thumb contacts the bottom card. Now with your thumb and index finger you will be able to turn over the top and bottom card as one. Hope this helps as it is a super quickie and as stated above all cards examinable.

The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

And here's an idea. Instead of using the awkward Annenman-Christ Alignment Move, learn to use a double deal. You know..while you're "young." A good handling appears in Kostya Kimlat's lecture notes "Card Work, Card Play."

You have a card signed as a marker on which you write IOU $500,000. This goes under a glass. You then perform colour monte as per the instructions with two jokers and an ace but instead of them owing you $14 you turn over the third card to reveal the IOU and the missing joker is under the glass |

I love Color Monte. I found the instructions to be adequate but would be happy to provide detailed assistance to anyone who wants it.

JoeKing: Sorry if you feel I sound NEGATIVE ALL THE TIME. What I really try to do is, based on my experience, and the information I have gathered from many sources over the years, is to state MY HONEST OPINION.
Sometimes it may be negative, like the fact that I think Color Monte sucks. The phoney looking cards are part of it. Perhaps if someone had shown me a better way I might like it, but, again, it is my opinion. I try to steer people into trying things differently, to not be part of the herd. Anyway, stay tooned... I shall return...

I too, do not like using the cards that came with the trick. I prefer using regular cards, although I like the idea of using two regular cards and the 14 card. Of course the benefit of using all regular cards is being able to do the effect with any deck.
Here is how I changed it up to use regular cards. I'm sure this can be improved somewhat. I use a joker, the ace of hearts (the money card), and 10 of spades. I explain that I use the joker(s) because there are two to a deck. I do the routine as written, up to the point where you say, "it can't be in the middle or on top" and then you show the money card on top. You're up to five dollars now. Here's where I change it up. I then say, "Well, I know it's on top now, you just showed me" I then fan the cards. "Then let's go double or nothing - if it's on top, we're even, if you're wrong you owe me ten" "I'll take that bet" "You owe me -" I turn over the top card (ten of spades) "- ten" Any thoughts? |
