Hate to say it, but I'm not gonna' reup.
The quality of the online MUM has nosedived in the last six months. I didn't even save the last couple.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

Perhaps you'd like to be more specific in your criticism of the magazine and email me directly. I can always be reached at mumeditor@gmail.com. Thanks. M. Close |

To Ringmaster,
I'm NOT an unbiased observer since I write a monthly column for MUM. But, my column aside, I have not seen any reduction in the quality of the magazine. Because of reduced revenue from the advertising, the number of pages has gone down, but I believe that Mike and Lisa Close have done a GREAT job with the magazine since they took over 44 issues ago. And judging from the feedback I've gotten, many subscribers feel the same way. Dennis Loomis

Well said Dennis. Kudos to Michael and Lisa. This is not an easy job they do and we should be glad someone has "stepped up to the plate" and kept a fresh look to give MUM a facelift and keep the magazine coming to us every month. Dennis, I also enjoy most, not all but most of the articles you have spent the time to include in the magazine. Thanks for your time and input also.

MUM is not the Society of American Magicians. I'm staying, Member# 6006, 1960s. Thank you.

I agree with you spartacus. But..... ringmasters complaint was aimed directly at MUM magazine. SAM is a wonderful organization that I am proud to belong to.

I personally think that Michael and Lisa have done an excellent job with the magazine. No magazine can provide each person who reads it 100% of what he or she is looking for. Michael, Lisa and the staff (yes, you too Dennis) do a very nice job trying to ensure that there is something in the magazine that will appeal to a variety of groups from performers to hobbyists to magic history enthusiasts and collectors. It is not an easy task to create such a variety of articles. Instead, it is a tremendous undertaking. Like any other magazine, the reader will find things that appeal to him and others that will not. It is very hard to imagine that there is not something of interest in each magazine to each of the groups I have mentioned above. Michael's response above makes it clear that his goal is to publish a magazine of substance and value. I think that he has succeeded on both counts.

The SAM is more than the MUM. There are so many other benefits. But, when I checked my mail after returning from our convention today, I was so pleased to see my August issue of MUM waiting for me. I find MUM the best magic periodical available.
But, if dissatisfied, let Michael know. He can't try to fix it if he does not know the problem. |

My point exactly. Ringmaster has not made any attempt to state what his problem was in detail. No one can fix a problem unless they know what that problem is.

Actually, someone should contact him personally, if they haven't already, and try to see what it would take to get him to renew. Saying things like, "He needs a scapegoat," in a public forum is not going to help matters. It's all about customer service.
Peace and Godspeed.

He is using the fact he is dissatisfied with MUM instead of giving the real reason. There must be more behind the story than not liking the contents of the magazine. I would presume most of us belonging to SAM do so for other reasons than simply receiving a monthly magazine. Michael Close does an excellent job with the publication and has reached out to ringmaster to see if there could be some amicable solution to ringmaster's dissatisfaction. I hope this clarifies what I meant. Ray

Michael Close is a curmudgeon. Thankfully, there is Lisa to smooth out the rough edges.
I had a chance to talk briefly with Michael in Pittsburgh and although he is aloof and distant, he does love magic and is serious about producing a quality publication. That being said, I believe that the MUM has drastically improved under his leadership. The quality of articles and writers is much, much better. I will list some of my favorites. Tech Tricks: Good to stay up to date with the latest offering in cyberspace. I have used many of the ideas in this column and some not related to magic. Of course the reviews are always a good read. ( I like that not all products are “Highly Recommended”) A Magician prepares: (Dennis Loomis) I love seeing all the thinking, ideas, and concepts that Dennis rolls out. Mental Breakdown: You never know what Christian is going to say or give you, a cool twist on an old trick or an essay on performance philosophy. The Nielsen Gallery: Awesome posters and the story behind them. I also like that I don’t seem to ever know for sure what is going to be in the mag. There are always some new columns, features, or articles. This keeps it fresh and interesting. The Story on Denny Haney this month was a home run. |

The challenge of editing a magazine like M-U-M is the wide diversity of ages, skill levels, and interests of the membership. There are also constraints imposed by budget requirements and the shrinking involvement of advertisers in print media.
Right now, M-U-M features regularly appearing columns on close-up magic (both card and non-card), stand-up magic, stage magic, illusions, mentalism, kid’s show magic, history (famous magicians, props, and posters), excerpts from current books, reviews (current books, DVDs, props, and tech items), personality profiles of contemporary magicians, and commentary and opinion. I certainly don’t expect that everyone will find everything in each issue to be of interest, but there will certainly be some articles of interest to everyone. The quality of the magazine is due to the remarkable generosity of the people who write for it, people who give of their time in an effort to improve and advance the art of magic. While Ringmaster is certainly entitled to his opinion, it does no good to simply trash the magazine in a public forum without having been specific about his criticisms. I have received no emails from him (either before or after his posting on The Magic Café). If he feels there are areas of magic that are being shortchanged in the magazine, I’d like to know what they are. My email address is at the front of every copy of M-U-M. To Richard Shure: I am the fifty-nine-year-old father of a five-year-old girl. I would ask that you attribute any curmudgeonly, distant, or aloof behavior to lack of sleep, rather than malice. Thanks for reading. |
