FYI:
Movie from 1964 on Turner Classic Movies on the 13th (yes Friday is the 13th!) at 5am CDT. Set your Tivo unless you are conscious at that hour. Haven't a clue but might be interesting. Andre

A great story this Seance on a wet afternoon.
Illusioneer and I went to see this film adapted into an opera at Lincoln Center last year. |

Thanks Eddie!
I'd love to see the opera but will settle for the movie which looks promising.

Houdini isn't a stretch for the genius who gave us magic in Godspell. Pippin, The Magic Show, Enchanted,TWicked and Seance I'd have been disapointed if it were anyone else!
So when are we gonna grab that cup of coffee, guys?

“Séance on a wet afternoon”
A moody black-and-white classic. One of the most extraordinary actresses of the century (who did too few films.) it is a disturbing film too, underplaying the slightly deranged characters. This was the perfect subject to translate to Opera! (Think in terms of “The Medium” by Menotti.) Even if you don’t *like* opera it’s a great fit for the genre. Now how did we amusingly veer off to the Houdini musical? Could not be two plots with less in common, ever! Does show how versatile a compeer though. One last word on Séance movie…. I believe that a reference to Houdini is, according to Roberts Rules (Cafe Edition), always in order as are references to Bacon, Zombies, and Harry Lorayne's creation of, well, the original version of everything down to the elemental level.

So did Harry Lorayne originate the Zombie wrapped in Bacon effect?

Seance on a Wet Afternoon is well worth watching. I discovered it before cable when local stations used to put odd little movies on Sunday afternoons when they thought no one was looking.
Some may think this film is an acquired taste, but for me it hits most of the right notes. Great atmosphere, though it is more of a dark 'caper' film with little enough to do with the 'actual' supernatural (apart from the desperate medium's delusions). Great turn for Richard Attenborough. The movie is worthy Hitchcock in many respects. Recommended. Thanks for the heads-up, Andre. BC

Yes, Dmkraig. In fact, I'm pretty sure he created smelting to fabricate the zombie, smoking to give us bacon, and I'm pretty sure he was the biological father of Houdini.

For what's it is worth... I just sent a letter to the Artistic Director of our world-class San Francisco Opera and requested he look into Séance on a Wet Afternoon for some future season.
If you've got an opera company in your town might be a fun thing to do, even if it turns out to be spiting in the wind. Magically, Bro. Walt |

Way…. off topic. But had to brag. I saw the ORIGINAL STAGE version of The Rocky Horror Show.
It of course had Tim Curry, Meat Loaf, et al. It came direct from London to the Roxy in L.A. The set was intricate scaffolding that the audience sat on, the actors moved/climbed around you, snuck up on you, even sweated on you…. talk about interactive! (“Séance” Opera note: I seen dozens of people walk out of operas, in mid-aria, first or second intermission, that does not mean the work or singing is good or bad, it just shows why there are more flavors than vanilla, in my opinion.)
