Seems so unfair that the males get the prettier plumage. Lovely pics, Laurie.

Frame of reference, John, don't you think? I think the females are very pretty, too. They're both beautiful. I suspect there are some camouflaging reasons involved, considering the female makes the nest, incubates and broods the little ones.
"Nesting Common Redpolls form monogamous pairs. Nests may be placed close together and are well hidden in dense, low shrubs, in clumps of grass, or under brush piles. The female builds an open cup nest of loosely arranged twigs, grass, and moss, lined with ptarmigan feathers, plant down, and hair. The female incubates 4 to 6 eggs for about 11 days. The male brings food to the female while she incubates and while she broods the young. About five days after the young hatch, the female begins to bring food to the nest. She continues to do most of the actual feeding..." http://birdweb.org/birdweb/bird/common_redpoll |

These redpolls are my friends, indeed. These photos were taken without zoom. The camera almost touching them sometimes- in fact I had to back it up to keep two in a frame- they graciously allow me photos. |

The photos I took yesterday I think are some of the best I ever have taken. They were largely inspired by the fact that night before last I found out that one of my favorite actors, Winston Rekert, had died in September. Wasn't widely reported and I found out when I dared take a look for an update on Google. Word had been out that he had cancer, so I knew what I might find in my search. Winston's work, specifically, Neon Rider, had a quite personal impact on my life during its original run. I was fortunate in that Winston joined facebook several years ago and I found him there. He was gracious enough to accept my friend request and Christmas Eve, 2009 I sent him a message to let him know his work had greatly benefitted me and thank him for accepting my friend request. He responded, thanking me and signed the note: "Yer friend, Win." He later left facebook, which concerned me, in terms of how his prognosis might be degrading. Great talent, lovely person. Motivated me to get out and get some really good shots of the birdies yesterday.

Had the day off work, so I went for a walk in the nearby ravine. Most of the birds (downy woodpeckers, nuthatches, ravens) wouldn't sit still long enough for a decent photo. Caught a couple of chickadees and some snowy woods.

I had a rough night last night and am feeling a little, not down or blue, maybe reserved or withdrawn, today.
Revisiting these pictures is very nice for me today. Thank you Laurie, Magnus, and Bob. Bazinga! |

Thanks Bazinga. I hope the rest of the weekend brings you strength. And I hope that your time withdrawn brings you insight.
John

Thankyou for commenting, Zombie, jazzy. She is well fed- folks are pretty good about keeping the feeders topped up on the trail. Not many redpolls out yesterday- colder and windy, but very nice out today and they were back allowing me photos again.
