Having recently read a review of my act at the International Magic Convention on MagicWeek I've decided that it must be me.

Dave Merry for me. Quite the pro.
Not clever enough to come up with something orginal, or did I.

Maybe it's just me, but it always seems that magicians are the funniest in venues that serve alcohol!!

Jerry Sadowitz - offensive yes, but very clever with his comedy and a genius with a deck of cards. Incredibly funny live - for the right audience. Just a pity more TV networks won't take a risk on him.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned Judy Carter. She is a hilarious magic comedienne.
I've also always distinguished between a comedian who does magic that doesn't work (e.g. Ballantine) and a magician who does comedy while at the same time fooling you badly (e.g. Tomsoni and Company; David Williamson; Fielding West). Both kinds can be immensely entertaining. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I have had the pleasure of seeing Michael Finney, Mac King and David Merry live more than once. For me, they are all really funny performers. Although I knew Michael's act from his DVD's, and I knew the lines were coming, I was still rolling with laughter simply because his delivery is so good. He really understands the secret of telling the same old joke as if he is telling it for the first time. Mac and David also know this secret!
Watching Jeff Hobson perform his act is a real laugh as well. Again, I have seen him on DVD's many times, but nothing was lost when I watched him do the same act live - he still had me laughing. Why? for the same reason as the other three above do, it's a delivery thing... It is impossible to say who is actually the funniest magician around. I have seen lots of 'local' guys really slay an audience. |

I have enjoyed watching many of the magicians named in the various posts to this topic. However, the first comedy magician I saw was Roy Benson, and if he were still alive today I think he could hold his own with those named already. Sometime during the 60's, towards the end of his career, I saw Roy perform in the Catskills. His psychiatrist routine was a very funny, and way ahead of its time, stand-up (actually lie-down) comedy set. His billiard ball and salt pour were strong pieces of magic and had built in comedy.

I meant to add Jay Marshall to my post. There is no doubt that he was a wonderful comedic magician and ventriloquist.

I can't say there is one identifiable best, but there are certainly those who at the top tier and for that I'd pretty well go along with korttihai_82's list
