Now I know this is not made by Tenyo, but I know you all like Tenyo like gadgets and mechanisms, so I was delighted to win this on eBay the other day for a mere £45. It's utterly brilliant in its construction and the reaction I got from showing it to my wife was one of complete amazement. (she's hard to impress!). It's quite Tenyo like in it's very clever secret and looks great. Basically you borrow a ring, get spec to hold it under a hanky, bring out the little box which is padlocked tightly shut. The spec drops the ring into the glass with a satisfying clink. You whip away the hanky and the ring has gone!! The spec takes a key, unlocks the padlock, opens the lid and hey presto, the ring is found in the box. The box can be examined all night long and they will never work it out. Great stuff!

What you're describing is a classic plot that Mr. Powell re-invented with this box. While it's beautifully made, as all of his effects are, it's a derivation of the Lippincott Box (in effect only...not the mechanical workings). I own both this box, and most of his other ring and watch boxes...they are all beautiful.
I question whether he even needed to develop this box, since the original Lippincott Box works great, and didn't need to be messed with. The only folks who know, or care how it works are magicians. Spectators are clueless. However, I digress. This box is an awesome effect, and you're right, it's as devious as any Tenyo trick. You may want to re-post your entry in another thread called "Tenyo-like effects right up our alley." It's all about other tricks we've found that are as sinister in their workings as Tenyo.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

How about having the ring change into a key in the glass...the key that opens the box.
Using an older lock with the right type of key, the spec could be holding it under the hank the whole time. even drop it into their own hand? Randy |

I agree that, while a brilliant idea that will fool magicians who know the Lippincott workings, the Pillbox design doesn't add a whole lot to the Lippincott or Porper strongbox approach and adds a reset issue that makes table hopping difficult. That said, it's an interesting little creation that has an antique feel, is durable, beautifully made from hardwood and brass fittings, and works quite well IMO. Alan |

On rethinking this, no need to go to the trouble of using an old, hard to find lock and key, just use a key ring that feels most like a finger ring on whatever key you use.

I just received this and absolutely love it. I am a collector as well as a performer and found this gem ingeniously clever. I received it without instructions and actually had to contact the seller for directions because there is absolutely no way anyone would ever figure this out without knowing the full scoop. This one is definitely for those with exquisite tastes or those that want to remove ALL possibilities of an accidental discovery while spectators are handling and unlocking the box themselves. The most deceptive box that I have encountered yet and I own many including Joe Porper's Strong Box 2.0. A real pleasure to own and perform with and comes highly recommended.

Thanks Richard for your opinion on this. Is Dave still making these?

Dave Powell has the following posted on his website. "Note: I rarely make this trick anymore as it is simply too complicated to produce. This does not work like a Lippincott Box. No sliding or pivoting trap doors. It has no magnets. It works like no other box in the world and it's completely examinable! Once Locked the box cannot be opened without removing the lock or using the special tool to activate the secret!" I obtained mine from a reputable Café seller and will cherish it for a lifetime.
