Hello Bros!
I need to age some fabric to smell old and musty. I’d ideally like to create the effect myself, that way I could control the scents, and it would be an enjoyable project. I know that Brother Shadow made a kick-butt version, but Karl is sadly out of circulation now. I also know a commercial version is/was available from Black Hart in the UK, but I’d rather not ship all the way from England, and if I recall it was fairly expensive. The best solution (no pun intended) would be to have a fairly straight forward recipe, and experiment to try to mix something up myself. Ah! Bizarre Alchemy… gotta love it. --Has anyone attempted this? --Does anyone know a viable recipe? --Have you used other methods such as household products? Thanks for your assistance! Magically, Walt |

Walt, just a idea for scent. Maybe, you can find a cover scent for hunting. I have not hunted in years, but there was a cover scent, called 'Earth'. It had that musty smell. Maybe, check at some sporting good store.
Thinking back,There was a a product called scent wafers,by H&S scents. It was a plastic disc, that was sented. If you find,it was called earth, you could drop in a bag,and put fabric in with it,and let the fabric absorb ,the scent.

It may be as simple as,placing fabric under a house in a crawl space,to give it a natural musty smell...just,a after thought.

I think you want something that isn't going to be microscopically living/growing. Blackhart's products & shipping are actually quite reasonable and delivery is faster than you'd expect.

I think Doug,has become one of us,now!
Thanks for above link...Now,what kind of smell,do I want... lol Chris,I think there is several items, that will have growth, after use! Maybe,Keiths products, says it does not promote any growth of bacteria! Maybe, the aging will also promote a growth...

I experimented with aromatic herbs a while back and discovered that tarragon against the smell of new pine wood is particularly musty.

Thank you Jon! Out to the store to by spices today I think <grin.>
I've also had it on good authority that shipping this type of liquid from England since 9/11 has become a lot more problematic with customs, and the chance of arrival is slimmer, that's another reason I'm turning to homemade. Magically, Bro. Walt |

I'd love to hear how it works for you. I've scoured the internet (propmakers, LARP sites, science sites, etc) and never found a recipe. I've used specific smells for props that required them, but have never found a way to duplicate that general old musty smell.

I decided to google fragrances, specificiall, what gives a perfume a musty smell.
rather than copy and paste the information, I am including the link below: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1903466 There are other sites which explain how heat and exposure to air can cause a perfume to smell musty. Combine and adjust elements and methods. Especially the suggestions Jon has made. experiment and hopefully you will create the essence of antiquity you desire. I have tried working with mosstoo, without success Kotah |

"Old and musty" can mean several different things, just like "antiquing" can take on a lot of different connotations. The first thing here is to define what the piece is and where it was and for how long and why, and then select smells that evoke memories of exactly those variables.
Spices, certainly, but just the right ones and just enough of them (you don't want the audience to think of spaghetti sauce or meat loaf). Mothballs are good. Stale tobacco. Some single-malt Scotches (i.e., Laphroaig) have a deep strong peaty smell, although they're expensive. Dampness works well after the fabric dries and only the smell remains. Give the piece a history, and the correct smells will become obvious.

What makes an old chair at some elderly lady's house smell like that? Seems you could acquire some old furniture from an estate, and strip the fabric off of it...and there ya go! Good idea? Not a good idea? This is an interesting topic. The "Essence Of Antique". Sounds like a TV show...! Ha!
