I know how most of you guys absolutely HATE Criss Angel, but I will come out and say it:
I love watching Mindfreak. Anybody know if and when it's coming back on? It sorta seems like its not....not sure why, it was a popular show. |

There were many reasons as to why if you know anything about the behind the scenes workings of the show. I believe there was to be some forthcoming specials that were talked about at one time, but haven't heard anything lately. Usually we hear about upcoming filming and see the many calls for "extras" when it's in production.

What needs to come back to TV is World's Greatest Magic, or Champions of Magic, or Masters of Illusion, or The Great Magic of Las Vegas, or....
Basically, a real magic show on TV.

Hahahaha Matthew, I was waiting for somebody to say something like that.
Still, I'll stick by my opinion that Mindfreak is a good magic show that entertains millions of people. In fact, a couple years ago, I watched it for the first time and was inspired to start my own magic career. Now, I thought Criss Angel was the coolest person in the world at the time, but now I understand the difference between him and 99% of all other magicians nowadays. He's famous and we're jealous No but seriously, I know why people don't consider him to be a "real" magician. I still think he's pretty cool though, and I would always love to see his show. |

I base my opinion of him off what made him famous, Mindfreak. Real magic doesn't involve paid spectators, camera tricks and second takes.
When I turn on the TV to watch magic, I want to see stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc6kPE-hrgs, not this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq8FzljzoII

MindFreak indeed catapulted his career. There certainly were creative uses of camera for obvious reasons as others before have done. Can almost guarantee there were NON paid spectators, and since it is tv and all the elements and factors involved in shooting a tv show would imagine being at least 2 takes. Just as Henning, Copperfield, Blaine, Burton and all others have done. Criss thinks and performs out of the box which is why you don't see box illusions but instead see things such as the link you posted from MF. If you want conformity then go ahead and watch box illusions done over and again in sterile/controlled environments. Nice piece of magic by Mr. Daniels though but not my cup of tea. Could be one of many reasons why Criss is world renown and Daniels is known mainly by magicians.

One of the reoccuring complaints from those who have attended the show is that they had come to see the stuff they saw on TV but instead were treated to standard box tricks that were repetitive in nature and not done very well. It's tough to top yourself in real life when the image you've made for yourself relies on the limitations of a television screen. Henning and Copperfield could at least replicate the illusuions they performed on TV. Angel can't.

Apparently you have not seen the show and have based your opinions on others and so I can not accept anything about your point of view relating to this. In court your opinion would not be admissible and be considered hearsay. I however have seen the show and unless you can give specifics you obviously don't know what you are talking about. IMHO the show is really quite good but and you state standard box tricks repetitive in nature?? Really? Respectfully I ask you to name them. Only box trick is his met box, which he does unlike anyone else without a curtain. The reviews you are speaking of were from 3-4 years ago when the show opened. Since CA had taken over directing the show a couple years ago-- it has turned around as well as the reviews. If it were as bad as you and others claim-- it would have closed 3 years ago. BTW read reviews of DC as there are quite a few that are very negative.

Wrong!! The show still gets bad reviews. My wife saw the show. She said it was terrible. I have actually heard that the show has got worse.
I'm glad at least a few Criss Angel fans liked the show, but the truth is, it's one of the worse shows on the strip. Even though you obviously enjoyed the show, and I have heard a few others give it a good review, but the over all concensus makes it clear that BELIEVE is surviving on the extra funds Luxor keeps pouring into it, and not because it's doing well. I don't think anyone needs to watch the show to know how bad it is anymore than someone needs to become a heroin addict to know what addiction is like. When you read the many, many pages of bad reviews BELIEVE receives, why chance it? That's what reviews are for. They help us make up our mind. The show can't close because Criss Angel has a 10 year contract, and Luxor just poured $100 million dollars into show. Shouldn't you know this though, considering you are accussing another member of not knowing what they are talking about? Also, be careful where on the net you get your info from. Some of those sights are set up by CA associates and public relations department. Plus, he now has Robin Leach as his PR. Guy Laliberté, the head of Cirque [du Soleil], is even said to have walked out of one preview.

I was simply passing along the information that the majority of people who comment on this show on Trip advisor think its bad. I've only heard second hand that it's not a good show. Friends and colleagues who have had the misfortune of having to sit through it have all unanimously told me to keep well away from this travesty. Life is too short to waste by watching bad magic. The reviews I spoke of are current and have been pretty much unchanging from the start of this show. Nearly five to one against and all pretty much echoing the sentiments of this one made just a week or two ago. "Was disappointed overall with the show...Had been really looking forward to it, especially after seeing the Mindfreak TV shows. Was really big on himself and great he is. Tricks weren't bad but repetitive. Banter in between was bad...inappropriate given a younger audience and not in the least bit funny. Would NOT recommend it." On Trip Advisor BeLIEve is #408 out of 529 attractions in Vegas Copperfield is #202 Penn and Teller #74 and Mac King #19 So clearly a guy in a bad suit who has talent can run circles around a rocker wannabe who made his reputation doing TV Magic Google "Worst Show in Vegas" and BeLIEve comes up.

Angel lost me forever as a viewer of anything he ever does again when he walked into a "random" clothing shop on The Strip (with a camera crew of course) and ended up doing a quick change act with the "startled" counter clerk. Supposedly the walk down the city street was supposed to impress the viewing audience into believing the shop he chose and walked into was something other than a pre-arranged set. That was the final straw, that is not even an attempt to do magic as any of us on this forum would define it.
Angel now might as well just do his effects with no props in front of a blue screen- and just add in anything he wants later to make it appear magical. His programs are often the magic version of a "piano concert" that has no skilled pianists who then play on toy pianos with no real working keys. That's entertainment?- perhaps maybe for a dreamy seven year old with a plastic magic kit or for someone with such little knowledge of the magic art form they really don't care what real performance skills are lacking or how the "magical" results are accomplished. Boring... If Criss ever ends up in a magic hall of fame someplace, might as well add in Bill Bixby, Willy Wonka and The Wizard of Oz. |

Hey satellite23,
I don't understand the verbal bashing Mr. Angel gets on the Café... :-s There were rumors about a new season (season 7) of MF starting September 2011 but (I think) in October A&E TV said, that there will be no new MF season in the next future... Sad but true. I also get into magic due to David Copperfield and Criss Angel (Mindfreak). I don't care how many guys on the Internet hate him cause one thing is for sure: he brought back the popularity in magic (at least in Germany) - Ok, we had Hasselhoff on the first place in the charts back in the 90's but that's a whole different story :-D Bye Nikki78

David Blaine deserves much credit for repopularizing magic with his "Street Magic Specials". Criss Angel came into the scene while it was still popular from the David Blaine Specials.
Criss Angel's timing was well executed, and helped keep the public interrested in magic. After the first David Blaine Special magic was busy, workers and dealers were seeing an increase in business. Criss Angel's Mindfreak series kept the public interrested in magic for a little longer, or a lot longer, depending on what side you butter your bread. An arguement can be made about if he has done more harm or good to magic. As a worker you probally reaped from the exposure with increased business, I know dealers did. The web exploded with online magic stores. Criss Angel's t.v show helped give exposure to magic. I have my reasons for not giving him respect as an artist, nor respect as a performer, but as a promoter I give him my respect. Especially on how he can use the media and his own fans to help keep himself relevant while he comes up with the next best thing since sliced bread. (Wierd...I suddenly have a craving now for toast.)

Ok, right. Mr. Blaine has started with TV specials and got the "popularity" ball rolling and Criss Angel continued this in a more "Rockstar"-like way. I don't like Blaine's way of performing - but that's just me
Perhaps Mr. Angel is a poorer performer than 80% of the members here at the Café but there are also many of his effects, which even I can show as a hobby magician. That again makes the whole thing for me sympathetic. Personally I don't like his big effects or this whole escape stuff. There are many of the big effects that scream "payed actors, camera tricks or simply FAKE" like his mass levitation or mass hypnosis demonstration... just my two cents

Interesting that all three mentioned, Angel, Copperfield and Blaine are making HUGE money. They know their markets, and play to them.
