Hi, please give me advice on how to prepare a close up routine. I want to mix some mind reading and some vanishes and some levitations. But I don't want to use any props that look like 'magic prop' and people think that if they had the prop they would have done the magic too. I want to make sure that all fits in a wallet.
So far I am thinking of loops for levitation, some tricks with ESP cards for mind reading and coin vanishes. Any other suggestions are welcome. |

How long does your routine need to be? Do you have a set amount of time in mind? Also would you consider a different wallet?

Shakuni, A THEME helps for going from trick to trick. 1) The tricks are easier to follow for the audience, 2) It "glues" the tricks together for a logical systematic performance, and, 3) It makes it easier for you to remember everything.
You may also want to focus on WHO YOU ARE; your character or persona when you perform magic. This will help with your approach, energy and style.

My pleasure! Ya don't have to spend tons o' money...start small, $25 to $35 at first...test the waters. No big steps. Keep a journal. Find free stuff if you can. Shop the Goodwill stores and flea markets. Asian knicknack shops have wonderful stuff, cheap! Thrift stores and yard sales are great too! Now, preparing a routine...
Well, guys, I'm going to hit you with a $35 purchase here, but...lemme tell ya...it's WAY under-priced, and I don't know how many copies will be available for long. I recommend you purchase directly from these guys, because, 1...they have it in stock. 2...they are fantastic people. 3...Walt is a member here in the Café, and is really a great guy! http://www.leapinglizardsmagic.com/tales_of_enchantment.htm Read the sample PDF! Your magic will NEVER be the same! Mine sure isn't, after forty years! Doug |

There is a very good book, I believe is still available from Lybrary.com, called Programmes of Famous Magicians. In fact there is a cupola of others older and similar to this but I have not seen. While the Programmes book is mostly for stage and club acts, you will notice that not everything has to have a sequential reason for being presented.
Usually one starts out with something flashy and quick, interspersed with something unusual and then builds to a final grand climax, that is, your best stuff. So its flashy, ordinary, and then the big finale.
Et tu, Spartacus?

My thinking about building a routine, after reading Tales Of Enchantment, is: start to taking more risks, and stepping out of the so-called "box", and getting rid of bad habits. Or developing good habits from the start. I've stopped doing magic the way everyone else is doing it. YouTube & Google woke me up! In the book, Walt calls it "cookie-cutter magic", everyone's doing the same thing, the same way, same jokes, etc. "No, the clean hand!" Really, this book is about making your magic more Magical in nature. You really want to UP the impact of your tricks and effects! I'm not praising this book just for Story-Telling - there are a lot of books on that - no. This book changed the way I think! I see opportunity in almost everything now! Think about it my friends; are we demonstrators of puzzles for people to solve? Or are we MAGICIANS with the most amazing impossibilities, or the most emotional trip into the unknown...? Why do we do magic? Just a few tricks for the family/friends? Bigger? A major illusion show? From a Vernet and a 9" silk to a John Gaughan Illusion, the audience needs to be awestruck...to come away thinking, "That was AWESOME!" and not "Hmmm, wonder how he DID that?" Make sense? Doug |

I have much more complicated essays on routining in both the micro and macro floating about, but here's a way to look at routing an act that can be really helpful....
Select your best stuff. Let's say it's 5 items. ALWAYS try to go with an odd number. Trust me. Now, look at the items you have selected. Imagine as vividly as possible what each looks like to the viewer/audience. Now, just look at those items again and ask yourself: If I was the audience in what order would I like to see these shown? Here's the trick: DO NOT over think this. Try to select the order as quickly as possible. Got it? Now, imagine those items in THAT order in your head as an 'act'. How does it 'appear' to you. What do you 'think' of it? When you have settled. Practice. Rehearse. Then DO. See what happens. Adjust. Do. See what happens. Adjust as needed. This is a type of mind experiment and can really help cut through the hesitations and 'stuff' that keeps one from making a final decision. Just DO it. You are going to partially tap into your subconscious as well as your conscious mind. If....IF...you don't have a really terrible sense of taste in entertainment there is a very good chance that you will (for you) come up with a nice little 'set' that you can do with confidence. Good luck,
Brad Burt
