Just to emphasis that in the right situation I'm sure this will make a great impact but........if the woman you upsetjust happens to be the wife of the Managing Director of the company that's booked you - boy are you going to be in trouble !!!!! I have decided I am not prepared to take that risk, so don't perform it.

The Web is a great trick...in the right surroundings.
Just to prove a point, I went over to a friend's house last night (Halloween). I've known him for years...I pulled it on him. After he picked himself off the floor, we both laughed so hard, we were wiping tears from our eyes...(I had to retrieve my spider from behind the couch!) He said, and I quote, "That's the best card trick I've ever seen (ha ha haaaa)!" Depends on who you show it to, I guess. I've fallen in love with the effect all over again. My buddy DID say, "I wouldn't show that one to most women!" Which reminds me, Jim. How about modifying the trick so a small flower appears on her hand? That was my friend's idea...no freak-outs that way, yet still has a nice surpise (albeit wimpy) ending? Just thinkin' again... Doug |

Jim and Scott:
Actually, I had eased up when I wrote my above post. You should have seen how I <really> felt... Well, having read your posts, I hear what you're saying. At the same time, I stand by my opinion that this is not good magic and it's a bad thing to do TO people, instead of performing FOR them. If I was not a magician and you did this TO me, I would have somehow avoided my urge to punch your lights out and, instead, have gone to the manager and done everything in my power to get you fired. You want impact and reaction? Well, there you go. Obviously I'm one who doesn't like spiders and who would be a very unhappy victim of your "magic". Speaking of which, just what <is> the magic here? Also, the fact that Michael and Lance bought into the trick does not prove anything. I recently bemoaned the fact that Fantasma, for all its marketing glory, is also packaging fake dog poop and fake vomit. Fantasma is much reduced in my eyes. As is Jim's "beautiful work with cards and coins". In my humble but thought-out opinion. Good luck to all who like this trick. Now, where's my "Vernon Chronicles" when I need it? Steve H

I don't think I would use The Web in a working situation or even for strangers. However, I love to use it for some family, close friends, or small halloween parties thrown by friends.
I would never want someone to fell like a "victim" so I am careful with it. I must admit that it's one of the best tricks I currently own! Thanks Jim!

Just to clarify to Steve and other members who may not know, Fantasma does not sell fake dog poop or vomit or any practical jokes. They are not available anywhere. Yes we may eventually sell them (they are products under devlopement hence why they are on our site) but they will never be sold alongside our more expensive line of magic. These will be bargain joke sets for pharmacys and discount stores etc with a different look to our products sold in FAO Scwarz for example.
However I cannot fully understand why this would make anyone feel different about Fantasma. We still carry the same magic line and will release innovative products. Two of the best magic shops in London sell practical jokes - Davenports and International Magic. I don't think this makes them any lesser (is that a word?) of a company. JMO

Jim,
I asked in a previous post regarding the actual spider. As I said mine arrived with a spider missing most of its legs. I have tried to find a similar one with no luck. Do you have any ideas where I can get one. Also can you let me know what the material to make it stick is? I love the trick, but I want to make sure I have ample "stuff" to continue using it. I love the reactions I get ! Thanks, Jeff |

Jeff you can get a similar fake spider if you go to a joke/halloween shop. They sell packs of fake 'webbing' which usually contains a small plastic spider to attch to it. This is what I currently use with an added black pom-pom. As for the sticky stuff, blue-tack is not sticky enough. You can use double sided tape but I have been told that the stuff is 'carpet adhesive'. I am still on my first packet, it should last a long time

Some people like to be scared. That's why there's horror movies and roller coasters. Of course watching a movie or riding a roller coaster is a personal choice. The web can be a real fun trick under the right circumstance, with the right person. Most people lov it, unless they have a real phobia of spiders. My own personal phobia is a phobia of people with a spider phobia. But...I still love this trick!

The name of that trick is "Butterfly Love." I believe it was (and Jim will correct me if I'm wrong) done with Jim's permission. I personally don't care for it, but that is merely personal preference. It would perfect for those who want to do the trick but are worried about the "fear factor" of the spectator.

Wow...
My girlfriend actually wants to know more about "Butterfly Love" (she made me promise never to pull "The Web" on anyone she knows!)! Can you believe it? Ow! Just got whacked for that! She went, "Awww?" when she saw this post above by Scott. OK, how do I get one? Doug |

Most major dealers should be able to get it for you. It is well made, just not my cup of tea.

I think it might actually be called "Caterpillar Love."

I agree with Cabrera that people like to be scared. However, they choose to go to a cinema or get on a roller coaster. If people knew they were going to be scared then this would alleviate the situation a little. I do my presentation of The Web very rarely now but when I did it more often, I would ask the people if they wanted to see the scariest trick in the world. Oh boy! Did they ever!
One of the reasons I came up with Phobia was to have the chance to ask people if they had any phobias. When I applied it to the spider, if anyone said arachnophobia, I could change the ending. With effects like this, the most important thing is how you handle the situation. If you look contented at the screaming women (or men) then they will not like you) if you can bring them down, make sure they are okay, then the way they view the situation will change. They know you were not looking to be malicious. It's still a trick only for the right audience.

HN Review 72: The Web – Jim Pace
AD: Jim Pace's "The Web" will out-impact any other effect in your repertoire. For those that want to go for the jugular and take no prisoners, the Web gets a more visceral reaction than any card effect ever created! In fact, there are some people you simply should not do this effect for because it starts out so innocently, yet ends with such a startling reaction! The effect, this makes 'em jump up and scream! Four blank cards are counted onto the spectator's palm up hand. Then pictures of spider webs appear and disappear from the faces of the cards. To conclude, the spectator is asked to wave his hands over the cards. As he does, he discovers a large, realistic spider on the back of his hand. The spider is undetectable, and you are way ahead! At the right time, in the right place, this receives an unprecedented response! REVIEW: Largely overrated. Comes with specially printed cards, the spider and the “gimmick”. It is a cheap way to get a quick reaction, to expose the Card on Ceiling and to suggest that you are carrying around props and hidden gimmicks. Overall rating: prank H.

Harvey,
You are right it is a prank. That is how it started. As far as the spider, it can be suped up by burning the fuzz with a lighter after it is on the spider...it becomes very realistic. I have a friend ( DAVID STONE )who took the handling of the basic effect (all backs count, flustration) and turned it into a magic experience. Presentation, presentation! Lance Burton is the only one that I know of that is famous that chose to use the patter and handling that came with the trick. It is a bear bones handling that any body can do. I am not sure that I get your second point of exposing the card on the ceiling though, can you expand on this? Thanks for the REVIEW, Jim

It's a great trick. Just use common sense performing it. BTW. Toupee tape makes a great replacement.

I have had great response with a twist on this trick. I use a heart rather than a spider, do this for a couple on a date with the patter "can one steal the other's heart" the heart on the card vanishes and turns blank along with the other three blank cards and he/she turns over her hand and the heart is stuck there. I have had women actually tear up a little over this. Try it out
