Hey gang! I just watched this DVD. It is Awesome. I know it was produced in 2006 and even then I never purchased it. The information was great! It was interesting that all the performers on the DVD had different opions about some of the same topic we have in this forum. A lot of information co-incided with Chris' sticky (btw, thanks Chris). I personaly have been gearing up to try my hand at restuarant magic and what I have gotten from the DVD, is you don't have to have the superstar magic tricks. Your there to make a memory and if you can do it with a TT, then so be it! Now I am not saying we should not push ourselves to be better, but the "I have to get this pharo shuffle down pat" is not the case! I feel like my eyes have been opened! LOL
Just wanted to share my thoughts...... |

The performers who shared their time, efforts, and the knowledge they have did not get rich on this DVD. The producer who made this video went to the time and expense of passing on this knowledge to you. You implied that you have not paid the pittance that this DVD costs, but like the knowledge that you "borrowed." It is this type of thought process that makes many of the better performers hesitate to share their "fruits." Just food for thought. Bob Phillips P.S. Please do not start harping on the idea of "magicians helping magicians." I don't think that was what was intended. |

Hey mfrisbee, read that the DVD came out in 2006 and you didn't purchase then, but you have seen it recently. Have you obtained a copy?
Not familiar with the content, not sure if it's something a fellow could see once and retain something valuable or not. I'm not the Magic police & there is no lecture coming, only curious how you came to view it. |

His words were "even then I did not purchase it." I am conversant enough to know that implies that he still has not purchased it. My thought is that if one has a goal, that one should support those who can help you get there, not sponge off of their efforts.

Yes mrfrisbee, it is an amazing DVD set. The good thing about restaurant magic is, you don't need 100 different effects. Just a few sets for a few minutes at each table, then you can redo a set at another table. I usually have a few "sets" or routines for those repeat customers.
On Bob's note, I have to agree with him, nothing can support our fellow magicians more than purchasing their materials that they "priviledge" us with. And not making money from those sales due to people copying, distributing, etc. will just make them stop producing them. Example, a friend of mine, Eric Jones came out with some AMAZING coin DVDs. I've been to his lecture, I know the tricks and sleights as I'm primarily a coin guy myself, however, just to support him and his kindness for sharing his knowledge on a retail scale. I've bought every DVD he has made. Will I have to use them? no. But it does make my personal collection grow and I feel good because I helped him. Same with Dan Fleshman, very good real life friend of mine, know his stuff, yet I still purchased his materials to help him out. It's the least we can do, because let's face it, sure the DVDs might be $20 or $30 or $100. But it's knowledge, and with that knowledge you can land jobs and gigs that will replenish that money you spent EASY. With that little rant out of the way, I will finish with, I'm glad you found a set of DVDs that helped you greatly, and I truly wish you the best of luck in your restaurant performing endeavors. ~Marty |

Come on guys who goes on a forum like this and says they did not pay for something they should of. What he probably means is he has only recently purchased it even though he knew about it for quite awhile.
And to answer your question Mr Mfrisbee yes you are correct the lay audience will be more impressed with a silk vanish than a perfect faro even though as magicians we know which is harder. Its all about entertainment. Good luck you are on the right track! |

Your probably right, themagicguy. I was just giving my thoughts on how I feel in regards to the subject. I apologize, mrfrisbee, if I came off as attacking you in anyway. That was not my intention.
With restaurant magic, you have to realize, a lot of people have never even seen a close-up magician. So anything close-up is good. I remember one time, a few buddies of mine were strolling main street here and went into a restaurant to get a bite. I had D-Lites on me and was messing around at my table. This table asked us to come over, my friend performed Banacheks Psykokinetic Silverware, perfectly. The table was amazed and then said "can we see the glowing red balls again?". The point of this story is, my friend did a routine that took a long time to master and I was just goofing off, and the table was more impressed with that trick than the one that took years to get down. |

I was not generally into restaurant magic, but I purchased this from ElmwoodMagic a few months ago, after a fellow magician recommended it to me. What I can say is that this set of 3 DVDs is worth every cent. It touches every important aspect of what an inexperiecd magician should know about restaurant magic (from how to choose the restaurant to how to get the job and what amount of material you should use). I particularly enjoyed Garrett Thomas's explanation about how to vanish large props at a table.
