What's your favourite opener for bar work?
A very personal thing I know. I like to start by asking about travel (my passion in life), progress to ask if they have been to Barcelona and then start with a monte variation depending on the setting. Would be interested to hear yours. |

Bounce, no bounce balls for me. A starter to break the ice my friend Shane Delon taught me. Go up to a table and explain that this ball can magically tell how much magic you (spectator) would like to see. "Let's see how much magic you would like to see" *bounce the no bounce ball* and be like "oh ok, well thank you for your time" pick up my mat and do a slight turn like I'm going to walk away. Usually gets a pretty good laugh and then I go into my actual routines.

For my restaurant gigs, Mini Chop Cup presented as an "Observation Test". When working casinos, as Aron Smith Magic stated "Extreme Burn" presented as how one can turn a "few dollars" into "hundreds" gambling here at the casino.

So many possibilities to choose from but the first thing I thought of was a Two In the Hand, One In the Pocket routine using whatever is available at the time - matches, olives, etc.

Prohibition cap in bottle I think is great for bar work. quick, visual, everything is examinable. instantly repeatable if necessary and instant reset.
just don't leave your bottle laying around because the staff will clean it up. |

Don't mean to insult anyone here but......Opening with a fire wallet in a strolling situation is a crutch for lack of personality or chops. Period. Using a fire wallet at all in close-up can be risky. I did it once and had a whole family freak out...I mean they were terrified. They had recently been the victims of a house fire and even the adults were still a bit nervous around flames. That said...my favorite opener...the one I used about 30 times today....."Hello, welcome to the (restaurant), my name is David."

Pepka, I LOVE your opener. It's honest, it's personable, just all the great elements of connecting with people. Thanks for sharing it!
