Hi everyone,
I am planning my AWANA lesson for this week (Wednesday evening). I try to use a magic object lesson about once every 4-6 weeks and I'm about due. I am planning on teaching on Daniel 5 and the writing on the wall this week. I was wondering if any of you had some thoughts on creating "writing on the wall". My first thought was to use a Spirit Slate, but the only place within driving distance that might have one in stock is about $85.00. I'm sure it's worth it but it's not in the budget this month. Does anyone have a DIY idea for creating mysterious writing? I seem to recall seeing plans years ago for making a manila folder folder into a change type device where I could insert a blank piece of card stock and remove one with writing on it. My thought was to stencil a hand on the outside of the folder and place a blank piece of card stock in the folder and describe the scene and then produce the card stock with "Mene, Mene, Tekel & Parsin written on it. The problem was, at that time in my life, I was interested in making my own effects and didn't hang on to the plans. I don't want anyone to give away anyone's copyrighted secrets but this seems to be something that I've seen several variation on of the years and I suspect it's probably out in the public domain. I just can't find it in any of my books or with a quick search online. I'd appreciate any help with the change folder or other suggestions. It really will need to be a DIY project though and probably be limited to fairly common household or Walmart type items. I do want it to look good though and be genuinely deceptive. The deadline is too close for me to get something shipped and my budget is pretty tight. Thanks a lot! |

Invisible ink. there are many instructions on the web on how to make & reveal the writing.
per your example - preparation: draw the handprint on the envelope and write the message on the paper in invisible ink. presentation: do your talk, show the blank paper, place in envelope, bring back out and reveal what the hand wrote. alternate 1 - depending on your method, you might be able to cut out a hand shape from cardboard and gimmick it to be able to reveal the writing by rubbing the hand on the paper alternate 2 - if you can find a small double sided chalkboard you can "show" it blank on both sides using the paddle move, then place in the envelope and pull back out to reveal the writing. could also be done with a piece of cardboard. potential talking point - God's word is always there, some of us have hardened hearts that prevent us from seeing it. cross-reference to the other verses that mention this. |

Wes, I've used the paddle move with a small whiteboard and it works! Just takes a few seconds to get it but it's great. I don't use a red felt pen so as to minimize any flash someone may get.
Good tip and the least expensive... |

Maybe use a large "Out To Lunch"?

I think you can write on paper with lemon juice and if you heat it with a light bulb behind it turns dark. Not great magic maybe, but an illustration at least.

Chalk artists use a combination of regular white chalk, invisible chalk (which looks white under regular light but glows with different colors under a black light) and a fluorescent tube black light. The chalk will cost you $5 or $6 from EternityArt.com, and the black lights can be found at Wal Mart with a cord and switch for around $10. The house lights will need to be dimmed at the right time for the message to be seen under the black light. If you are not familiar with the process/setup of doing these hidden pictures let me know via pm or this thread. Best, Kerry

Thanks for all the great advice guys! I'm putting the finishing touches on a set up I think will work. If it turns out nice I'll try and record it and post. I appreciate all of the feedback! It's wonderful to have this community of fellow Christian magicians to draw on. I wish there was a FCM group that met a little closer to me but most of the people on here are wonderful with advice and mentoring.
