Two excellent routines from Denis Behr's "Handcrafted Card Magic" , Vols. 1 and 2, respectively. Check 'em out:
Plop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIK1JSoX3Z0 Herbert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0fVi84sWSw Quick, direct, stunning. And they each have the two essentials - a laugh, and a moment of amazement. I'm finding most of Mr. Behr's material is like that. Anyone who thinks that originality is dead, or that magic books are a thing of the past, need look no further than Mr. Behr's work to be reassured... fantastic material. Thank you Mr Behr...! |

Great! "Herbert" was one of the highlights of this year's EMC for me.

I had the privilege of seeing Dennis perform Herbert in the close-up room at the Magic Castle a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely stunning. You don't see many Standing O's at Friday lunch.

When I discovered "Herbert" watching the EMC I had beeen working for almost a year on some similar handling with the rubber band my idea started more like something in the way of "let's make some handling on the classic rubber band location but more open". I finished with some sort of handmade ridiculous half-pass which looked like a fast pull snapping the rubberband and covering the deck momentarily. My work was basically trying to make that moment less snappy and more fluent (lots of body movement, handling the deck all around me while standing) but it never looked completely free of fishy moves.
Then I saw Herbert and I was like: WOW. And then I realized the essentials were the same as mine but SO MUCH MORE CLEAN, the 'erasing' of the rubber band is such a BIG idea... I was not only amazed but it made me feel small and dumb. I was hitting that wall of concrete and he didn't just go around the wall, he built his castle out of the wall I was tryng to demolish. Did I say I love Herbert? |

But my favourite routine from the entire set is easily Herbert The Trained Rubber Band. You can see his performance of Herbert from the DVD in this promotional video (the routine starts 30 seconds in): For more info about the entire "Magic on Tap" DVD set, see my full review elsewhere on The Magic Café here: Review: Magic on Tap (Denis Behr) - Four amazing DVDs from one of the best card technicians in magic http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......c=664352 |
