I’ve watched Brother Paul for years and have always admired his performance skills and humor. His show at our local festival was always on my must-see list. His act always included some of his signature effects, and the highlight for me was his Stupid Bean Trick. For a layman, it’s absolutely flabbergasting the first time you see it. The way he performs it, you tend to think that maybe the whole thing is a lame, yet funny stunt. You aren’t sure if maybe you’re watching a balancing stunt, maybe some weird juggling? Then the magic happens and you get one of those ‘what just happened’ moments that makes you laugh.

This past fall, when I found out Brother Paul was going to be releasing his version of this effect, I was one of the first people on his waiting list. It has finally arrived and it was worth the wait. The Stupid Bean Trick is an updated and refined adaptation of the Paul Fox Confetti to Beer trick. In Brother Paul’s version a can is filled with beans and with the snap of a finger, the beans disappear and the can is suddenly full of water. The water is poured into a cup and you end absolutely clean. The soup can can be fully examined.

Brother Paul has a great performing character, and even though he performs this silently, he has figured out great moments within his routine that are great visual comedy. Comedy and silence – a unique combination. From the spectator’s point of view, they are shown an empty soup can. The can has a few beans poured into, and is then filled to overflowing with an entire paper bag full of beans. The can full of beans is then balanced on an upside down cup and then covered with the bag. When the bag is removed, the beans have transformed into water which is cleanly and fairly poured from the soup can into the cup. You end as clean as can be.

The workings of this effect have been redesigned by Brother Paul and are custom made. The gimmick is a refinement of the Paul Fox gimmick and built to last a lifetime. The Stupid Bean Trick package is complete, so you can empty the contents of the box, watch the DVD, and get this ready to include in your show. In my opinion it is priced appropriately with the pros in mind (as opposed to the merely curious). If you are a street performer, Brother Paul even shows you how to get ready to perform even if you are completely surrounded

This is truly a classic effect. It’s great for the streets or festivals, but suitable for just about any venue. Great comedy and wonderful magic.

Thanks Brother Paul for sharing this with us.

Does anyone know what the reset is like? Could this be done on the street?

Absolutely it can be done on the streets. I've watched Paul do this for years.

The reset for the beans and stuff pretty much takes place automatically while you're putting it away. Paul shows you how to reset the water and actually make that look like a trick.

Thanks for the great review. Yep, it's one of my favorite and most requested effect from my regular clients. If I leave it out of my show, it's for sure, when I'm passing the hat, that someone will come up and say, "What happen to that bean thing you do?"

As for the question of reset, it resets in less than a minute and I've never been popped with this effect. The plus factor, for street performers, is that my routine is done in silence and so you get a 4 minute break, the whole audience is involved and you get a drink of water at the end. It's like taking a break in the middle of a show except the show continues on. I love that kind of stuff. Honed on the streets for 17 years and works for 20 to thousands, surrounded and self contained. Packs really small. Street rugged.

Any questions, drop me a note or go to the site.

John C, yes I did, read EVERYTHING I could find on it, plus watch all video snippets. The reset issue was not clear for busking. So I emailed BroPaul and he promptly and fully replied. His reply is yes he has reset his on the streets, so now I am very happy and it is on my 2013 shopping list.

Streets is where I honed it and use it to this day. Thousands of shows. ALSO great for stage, parlor and small gatherings. I've even done it table side with great success. It just works. For that, I'm thankful and grateful. I don't like stuff that is in the 95% success rate. It seems like that 5 % jumps up WAY too much. This works 100% of the time.

If your a worker and want something that will definely go into your show this is the ticket. Easy to do and set up, just put your personality into the routine. The DVD teaches you everything without a bunch of hyped up clips and all the fancy editing. It's almost like brother Paul is sitting with you. The props are first class and will last you a lifetime. I had some questions prior to purchasing the effect and brother Paul was quick to respond with honest answers. Shipping was fast. I consider this probably one of the top effects I've ever purchased and its going into all my shows. I also did something I've never done before, I received the trick on a Thursday and performed it the next day. Highly recommended!

This trick looks really interesting.

Can it be altered to work with other objects to fit a theme?
Eg jellybeans, candy, popcorn

Thanks

I'm only part way through the dvd but from what I can tell thus far, I see no reason you couldn't use jellybeans, popcorn etc. Paul has designed the gimmicks in such a way that you can customize as you see fit. I hope to get through the dvd tonight and finally start playing with the props. The dvd is very thorough and Paul seems like a super nice guy. While he could have easily explained everying in 10 minutes, the dvd is an hour long and he goes over everything you could possibly need to know.
