I've used rice different colored beans, even rocks. But you can use really anything marbles and yes jelly beans or popcorn. I've been thinking of using salt for an idea I'm working on. Really anything dry and small, that you can dump in a can and have it change into a liquid of your choice. Water, beer, wine or a hard liquor... Juice, coffee really any liquid. And you can drink it at the end. Just PM me if you have any questions. I'm here and there, but I check the internet often. Have fun with your ideas and share the magic... |

I just received my "Stupid Bean Trick" from Bro. Paul. If you are a pro or semi-pro, don't sit on the fence with this one. Get it. You will use it. The gimmick is sturdy and built like a tank. The information contained in the package is first-rate, and Bro. Paul seems like the type of guy that would help if you have questions not addressed in the material furnished with the effect.
The trick itself is deceptively simple in working, but the true magic is built by the interaction between the performer and the audience. Study Bro. Paul's "playing" with the audience - the timing, pacing, and the expressions. This trick gives you a chance for your character to bond with the audience in a fun, playful way. It reminded me of a silent Red Skelton comedy routine |

I just wanted to thank everyone on this post for the kind words. It has been in my show for a couple of decades now and kills every time. I like stuff like that. Draws the entire crowd in. If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a note here as a PM or go to the site and shoot me an email from there.

I don't weigh in very often on a trick or routine, mostly because I don't want to become part of the hype. But I will put in my 2 cents here, for what it's worth. I got this from Bro. Paul and I can tell you that this is a good, solid, working routine. The props are first class, the routine is commercial, and the teaching is well done and complete. The routine is also easy to execute, more importantly it is easy for the audience to understand.
All in all, well done Bro. Paul! Robert |

Tried to make the gimmick with jelly beans. If you are going to try it, go out and find plastic jelly beans, not the real things. Real jelly beans bleed and it gets a little messy. I got it to work but should have been smart enough to find fake jelly beans first.

Yep... Sometimes we don't think things through. LMAO. I made one out of rocks once. I was also doing rock productions with dove harnesses. Why did I choose "rocks?" Not sure, no one was doing stuff with rocks I guess. Yes, it was funny, but the drawback is the weight of packing rocks everywhere. With the bean trick made in rocks, I needed a bag of rocks too. It was unworkable, but we do that kind of stuff now and then.
But very nice Eric... You're there with it. Enjoy it and keep 'em laughing. Your post made me smile. |

I may be talking out of my a*s here as I do not have this trick. If you are going to do it with jelly beans, couldn't you get an aerosol can of clear spray paint and spray the jelly beans? It would seal them, and you don't have to do a pristine job (overspray would not be an issue). Just thinking "out loud" here.

Wow! Brother Paul has put together a great package with this routine. You get everything you need except a wand and the water. The DVD covers everything you need to know. And the gimmick will NEVER wear out. I bet a lot of people will watch the demo and pass this over, heck a few years ago I won't have pick this up, but now I see wisdom and great potential the Stupid Bean Trick has and I'm happy to have it, it's going to be a major player in my street and festival shows.
There have to be other happy owners out there, what do you guys and gals think? ~Gavin |

I am the owner of part of the original Paul Fox gimmick (with bits of confetti still glued on) and until I watched the instruction DVD to the "Stupid Bean Trick" I hadn't a clue what it was I had! Basically I had a rusted mess obtained with a box of gimmicks and loose ends from an estate sale.
This prop/gimmick is way (way, way) better than the original. It is well thought out, well designed, and expertly made. It is built to last (unlike the original Fox gimmick). This is truly designed by someone that uses the prop and performs the trick. Honestly it was designed by and made for a worker. Overall quality of the props provided is top notch and selected for the working pro. Everything needed to start practicing and rehearsing is provided (except a wand - use your own). The routine is pretty close to self-working. Watch the video link and you see pretty much what it is. The instructional DVD gives you a short history of Bro Paul's development of the trick. It takes you step by step from layout of props (and the reasoning behind the layout), to the sequence of use of the props and proper lay-down and control, to handy hints and stage craft notes garnered from over a decade of actually performing the routine for pay. I can see why good Bro Paul didn't want to give this away (but am glad that he did). This is a solid personality piece for him that has been developed and honed under trial by fire conditions. I can see it being a closing trick. In a day when so few good stand up tricks and routines are being produced it is refreshing that this little gem comes along. For the stand-up performer (street, parlor, or stage) who wants some gentle laughs and a great punch ending this is the routine. Honestly, I wouldn't be sad if he didn't sell any more (good for me rotten for Bro. Paul).

Thanks everyone for your reviews. I did wonder if anyone tried to spray paint jelly beans and what the results were. That was quite an idea.
The Stupid Bean Trick has treated me very well over the years. It's truly a pet effect and after my machinists engineers gave me version #8, I knew I was onto something. For those of you that have purchased it, I thank you and if you have presentation ideas, comments or questions, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm here for you. For those of you looking for something new to add to your show, look at this closely. I agree, it's not for everyone and for us doing it, we are thankful for that, but Harry, I'm hoping to sell a few more. Yes, sweet and sour for us all. I think the best part of it for me is that when I'm doing a street show, I can, at anytime, take my audience and train them to respond, in a positive and loud way, perform The Stupid Bean Trick in silence for 4.5 minutes and then have a nice drink of water at the end. Because it is self working, except for presentation, it's like taking a 4.5 minute break in the middle of the show, having a drink and then moving on with the audience being entertained on auto pilot. It's fun for me to watch it happen. It's also fun for them because it involves them all. What a kick. I just wanted to chime in and say thank you for your support, reviews and energy. Enjoy every precious moment. |

I haven't tried spraying them and apparently plastic/rubber jelly beans are harder to come by than I had hoped. If anyone finds some, please post a link.

Just buy some Sculpey (the kind that bakes in the oven) form it into jellybean shapes and paint them after they've cooked you can purchase Sculpey at most craft stores and possibly even Wal-Mart hope that helped! =) I found it on a post about fake jelly beans. Let me know how it works. |

Finally put this into action three shows Friday and three Saturday. In my initial trial runs, my 5 year old hated it. So I switched to jelly beans and went with light blue gatorade for the liquid. Needless to say, those two changes made a huge difference. I had it as my second to last effect for my three shows on Friday but it got such strong reactions I decided to make it the finale for my shows on Saturday and it killed. People loved it. The colored liquid really makes a difference for some reason and the kids loved the jelly beans. Definitely a keeper.

Emyers99: Over the years, I have built my show by adding finale's. I first add it to the beginning of the show, learn what that audience likes and doesn't like about it then I move it to the finale. So at this time of my life, ALL my routines have been a finale in my shows.
Thank you very much for purchasing The Stupid Bean Trick. Thanks for rebuilding the gimmick and making it your own. It will treat you very well. Also I'm glad you connected with the strength that it has. I don't think this one will sit in anyones drawer and collect dust. It's bullet proof entertainment and made to last. PM me if you have any questions, comments or ideas. I love hearing them all. ALSO I want to thank all the magicians that have added this to their shows. Your emails are overwhelming and touch me deeply. Just continue to share the magic and as it says in the box... "Shhhhhhhhh..." |
