Well, I have wanted to do this for some time. As many of you know, we have had the Book of the Year Award for a number of years. I have opened that thread today so get voting there! But you know, the face of publishing is changing in magic and publishing in general with Kindle, Apps, and other electronic means of information dissemination and retrieval. Moreover, I find no logical reason to privilege physical books over e-books. The past few years have seen a plethora of great e-books from some of the best in the business. It's well past time to recognize these works and these authors!
Here are the ground rules: 1. The e-book must have a 2012 copyright or publication date clearly visible 2. E-books from L&L Publishing do NOT count in the voting process. I realize that this may seem obvious, but I felt it important to include this rule to clear up any confusion. The e-book may have been produced this year as such, but in L&L's case, these are e-books that were previously published as physical books. 3. E-books from Lybrary.com and any other online sellers must have a 2012 publication date or 2012 copyright. Again, it's obvious, but, necessary to diminish any confusion. 4. Café members must have at least 50 posts to vote. Please understand that I am not implying that members with fewer than 50 posts know less about magic. Rather, I want to avoid or at least diminish ghost or troll votes. 5. There are no nominations as such. The e-book you name IS your vote. 6. I have thought about digital download videos and since they are included in this section, for the purposes of the award, they DO count. I would ask however that if a product was released both as a physical DVD and a digital download that you not vote for the product. Perhaps one of you may want to do a DVD of the Year Award. 7. IMPORTANT: In keeping with Café rules, any member who has an e-book being voted on who is banned from the Café will not be eligible to win. This is Café policy. Please consult the Café rules that we all agreed to when joining. If you still have an issue, please take it up with the admins. I am not an admin. Authors work hard to further the art no matter the medium and while the award carries no "prize" it is nonetheless an important informational resource as well as recognition for the hard work of these authors. In that sense, every e-book is a winner. Voting begins today 31 December and ends 31 January 2013. Have fun!! Vlad |

Happy to see a couple of votes thus far. Come on folks, this is a chance to raise awareness of e-books and end the privileging of of certain forms of media over others. I have not read the book Chris voted for, but note his words. I could start a whole thread on amazing discoveries I have found in e-books.
I really hope that this award can take off! |

Keep the votes coming please folks! I am maintaining a bit more of an active presence here in terms of posting because I really would like to see the E-book Award share the same importance as the Book of the Year.
Even Chris Wasshuber the man himself, purveyor of e-books and diminisher of my bank account has voted! |

Yeah, I guess with that vote I upset about 200 of my other authors but hey, such is life Kidding aside, I know for a fact that there are several ebooks worthy to be called 'Ebook of the Year'. I am curious where this will go.

I have read glowing reviews of e-books over the past few years and I wrote a few myself. Looking over this section I see a TON of new e-books being discussed/mentioned. Yet only seven votes cast? Come on people, let's work to rid e-books of the ugly stepchild status that tenaciously clings to them!!
Best, Vlad |

I don't want to offend friends whose books I might have bought but haven't included here, but I'll restrict my votes for eBooks from which contained information that I actually used in paid gigs:
Looch's 4.8 and SAD Night Bill Cushman's Dr. Bill's Bend I used the material from all three of these eBooks. I also really enjoyed McBride/Haas's The Show Doctor and hope that it paves the way for more truly well designed multimedia eBooks. Honourable Mention: Elliott Bressler's Switchcraft CONTINUES to deliver the best value in an magic publication EVER.
