One ebook I enjoyed a lot (and that has a 2012 date on it although it was previously published in print as I understand it) is Paul Hallas' "Across the Void". The contents look only at 'cards across' types of tricks, giving an impressive history of the effect and the thinking behind different variations. It's a thoughtful and well-written text (with a number of illustrations), and describes the working of a number of tricks, which are put in the wider context of the time in which they were constructed. There are thoughts on the use (or not) of envelopes, the optimum number of cards that travel, the distance the spectators see them traverse etc etc. A very interesting read, not one that sets out to knock your socks off, but it gives a good background and understanding of the options to consider when doing this type of trick. So I'll give it my vote.

Nominations are closed already? Then I'll make my not-so-secret ballot by voting for Artifice, Ruse, and Erdnase.

Hi wizards, warlocks, and ne'er do wells! (I fall into the third category). A few PMs and a question here from our esteemed Chet has prompted me to post the groundrules again for the voting. As this is the inaugural year for an award in the e-books/downloads section of The Café, I suspected that this would need a bit more TLC. A respected member was unclear on the post count requirement put in place and before I paste in the ground rules, I think I need to reiterate why a 50 post minimum was established for this award and the book of year award.
Last year's book of the year award was derailed by troll votes and a misunderstanding of Café rules as they apply to banned members. Two of the authors in last year's running were banned during the course of the voting for reasons that had nothing to do with the voting. Café rules state that no banned member may benefit from any sort of promotion from The Café. The admins informed me that the awards are indeed a form of promotion. It makes sense because The Café is to my knowledge the largest online magic forum and as such, can be a quite a beneficial thing to state that The Café voted one's book as the best of the year. The banning of the first member had touched off a wave of troll votes and the banning of the second resulted in a lot of insults - mostly leveled at me! Now, I am not one to back down from a fight but this V.I.P. was NASTY; he blamed me for Café regulations even though I clearly stated that I have no official connection to The Café. To this day, this second member has never apologized even though he has my personal infornation, so, I speak with my wallet and will not buy anything bearing his name. I do these awards out of love for the art. But last year taught me the proverbial shooting of the messenger lesson. It's a pity that I had to close the award last year. It pained me not to be able to name Woody Aragon's A Book in English as the winner - which it was. But, the hue and cry from the trolls and the sudden flood of both books prevented me from being able to name the winner. I would not want Senor Aragon to feel insulted. Now, all of that being said, it really was a difficult decision for me to impose the 50 post requirement. I do not judge a person's knowledge of magic, mentalism, or the other arts by the number of posts. I lurked on this forum for three years before joining and I remember how strange it felt for those first 50 posts when the appellation "New User" accompanies one's name. I have learned an amazing amount of information from folks with three posts! But, for the sake of these awards, I simply did not want to deal with feeding trolls who frankly I think should just either starve or go do something like collecting rusted and opened tins of Green Giant veggies from the 1950s. So here again are the groundrules: 1. The e-book must have a 2012 copyright or publication date clearly visible 2. E-books from L&L Publishing do NOT count in the voting process. I realize that this may seem obvious, but I felt it important to include this rule to clear up any confusion. The e-book may have been produced this year as such, but in L&L's case, these are e-books that were previously published as physical books. 3. E-books from Lybrary.com and any other online sellers must have a 2012 publication date or 2012 copyright. Again, it's obvious, but, necessary to diminish any confusion. 4. Café members must have at least 50 posts to vote. Please understand that I am not implying that members with fewer than 50 posts know less about magic. Rather, I want to avoid or at least diminish ghost or troll votes. 5. There are no nominations as such. The e-book you name IS your vote. 6. I have thought about digital download videos and since they are included in this section, for the purposes of the award, they DO count. I would ask however that if a product was released both as a physical DVD and a digital download that you not vote for the product. Perhaps one of you may want to do a DVD of the Year Award. 7. IMPORTANT: In keeping with Café rules, any member who has an e-book being voted on who is banned from the Café will not be eligible to win. This is Café policy. Please consult the Café rules that we all agreed to when joining. If you still have an issue, please take it up with the admins. I am not an admin. Authors work hard to further the art no matter the medium and while the award carries no "prize" it is nonetheless an important informational resource as well as recognition for the hard work of these authors. In that sense, every e-book is a winner. Voting begins today 31 December and ends 31 January 2013. Namaste, Vlad PS: The next update will be 17 January - keep the votes coming! |

Hi Vlad. This is a great idea. Thanks for your efforts. Your rules seem very sensible to me, though I'm not so sure about #6. What will the award be called if we include video downloads? I'd prefer the category to be just ebooks, or there could be two awards - one for ebooks and one for video downloads.

I vote for The Show Doctor by Jeff McBride and Lawrence Hass. The content is important and relevant to magicians of any level, and the format sets the standard for magic ebooks.

I am also doing the Book of Year Award in addition to this one. I thought that for this inaugural year since downloads are part of this section to put them together since more and more e-books are including video downloads. For the 2013 award perhaps we can do it differently or I could get a volunteer to help with the award. I appreciate your contributing ideas as this particular award is in its infancy. I would really like to see the day when e-bboks are not seen as the unwanted purple and green haired weak stepchild of physical books. Namaste, Vlad |

If we get about 50 different ebooks with one vote each - would they all share the award?

I sort of suspected that there wouldn't be a runaway winner this year since the idea of an e-book award is so new and the number of e-books published in any given year always and obviously surpasses the number of physical books published. What I am hoping for is the raising of awareness of the informational value of e-books. Peter Duffie, one of magic's greatest creators really pioneered the magic e-book and they are among the best reading I have ever done and that includes physical books. The same holds true for material by Cameron Francis, Liam Montier, Dan Harlan, and many more. If we do not have a clear winner this year, then perhaps some brainstorming is in order for the next go around. Perhaps the the most fundamental issue to deal with is how to create an award in a publishing area that is so prolific. Many of us have Lybrary.com accounts and it's so very easy to go there and end up buying five things when you wanted just one! What I may do is consult with Chris Wasshuber and Peter Duffie for their thoughts after this particular thread is ended omn 31 January as well as begin a thread in February that would be a year long conversation in which all of us can provide suggestions to make the award more focused. I will say that if anything, I feel that this award thread has at least collected a nice list for other magicians and mentalists to consult and that success is due to all of you! So, every journey begins with the first step and this step is a bit of a stumble, but, it hasn't faltered. Thanks again Muse, your posts and your thoughts are always well considered. Namaste, Vlad |

Please can someone help.
Yesterday I stumbled upon an Ebook which I was interested in purchasing, however I did not have the time to purchase it, and so bookmarked the site or so I thought. I cannot find the site or remember the name of the ebook, the following are all I remember...... Price was 25pounds sterling There was a link to 'The Wizard Product Review' and the guys gave it about 86% One effect was to have a person look at a list of songs and concentrate on one, the performer would know which and start humming the tune. Another was to have a person think of someone they know who they had not heard from for a while. Borrow their phone and the phone would ring, it is the person they are thinking of that is calling. The only other I can remember was a book test that the guys at Wizard Product Review really raved about. I know that's not a lot to go on, but does anyone have this. Thanks in advance, Ian. |

That said, would anybody who has performed the music experiment PM me with your experiences with it? Maybe because I am also a musician I found the routine iffy in terms of doing the experiment for another musician or a music history savvy spectator. I don't want to explain further in this open forum for fear of exposing the method. I will HASTILY add that this e-book is excellent (remember I am not voting) and contains some really hard hitting pure mentalism experiments. I just feel a bit uneasy about the music experiment. Namaste, Vlad PS: I hope that you mentalists noted that even though I am primarily a magician - and horror of horrors mostly a card guy - I did use the proper terminology "experiment" as opposed to the more magician oriented term "effect." Donations are enthusiastically accepted from those wishing to reward me for avoiding such a gaff. |

MANUS - Mike Phillips The Triskadequadra Principle by John Hostler Magician's DIY Tips and Tricks - Chris Wasshuber Kapow - Cameron Francis and Liam Montier Mind Blasters USA - Peter Duffie The Prodigal by Atlas Brookings 4.8 Lecture Notes - Looch Ready, Set, Guastaferro by John Guastaferro Logar Scrolls by Bryn Reynolds The Stanley Collins Force - Steven Youell The Portugal Notes - Peter Turner Pulse Rate - Matt Mello Across the Void by Paul Hallas The Show Doctor by Jeff McBride and Dr. Lawrence Hass Sad Night in Hamburg by Looch A couple of notes: Chet: Artifice, Ruse, and Erdnase I could only locate as a physical book http://www.magicbookshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=16507. So if you want your vote to count here, I need a link that shows it is an e-book. Otherwise, please vote for this in the Book of the Year Award thread? Muse: I decided to count the Hallas e-book since you stated it does have a 2012 copyright/imprint on it. I suspect that Paul may have revised Across the Void since its original priniting. I do not have the physical book to compare. So, unless I learn other wise, the vote will count. If it is a reprint, then it would not count because it would be like counting an L&L reprint. I will PM Paul Hallas for clarification. Well folks, no front runner, but one author leading! Still, I hope that this thread is proving valuable to you - I know it has for me and I suspect that Chris Wasshuber as well as the authors whose e-books he does not carry will be getting some of my money - one already has in fact. Next update is Thursday 24 January. |
