To the person who mentions Derren Brown's book Pure Effect: Yes, this has exactly what OP is looking for. I've tried, successfully, both the three of diamonds force and the jack of spades force from it many times, with the three of diamonds force working most successfully.
To everyone else, including Daz, the methods there are card imprinting through (blatant and subtle) suggestion, not through any type of equivoque. However, Pure Effect is rare. It will cost you at least 300 dollars most places you can find it. Brown University's library has the book in its special collection on magic, and while they won't lend it, they will photocopy up to 50 pages from it as an inter-library loan, which you can ask for at your local library. The section you'll want is called "Two Verbal Card Forces: Methods for forcing mental suggestions, using only suggestion and gesture. No cards are used." This section goes from page 155 through page 160. |

With respect itr, if craigboldy only does simple tricks, doesn't know the name of what he is looking for, and doesn't even know where to begin looking, he probably is not at any sort of level with his magic that will allow him to use the resource you mention. As I said, we all need to learn to walk before we run. I would also point out that forcing, via suggestion that is sublte or blatant is not imprinting a card on someone's mind. It is myriad methods for getting a spectator to choose a card you want them to, and having them think that the choice was their idea. The only way to " imprint" a card would be with hypnosis, and that would also qualify as a force.

You can force a card like Kenton Knepper in Dunningers Delight. Wonderful force utilizing several methods, including several outs that still forces the card, to get you the card you want every time.

All interesting points being made - however I have been working on a mental card force as such myself. It is still in its infancy however I have found that it is very easy to "mentally force" a particular suit under the right conditions. The difficulty is getting the spectator to settle on a particular card (that in his/her mind is free choice) The elimination of 12 options and settling on one card is the key. however having said that I have achieved a reasonable success rate of about 85%. which at this stage I am happy with because the result when it works is just mind blowing. I think it should be noted that I am not looking for a routine with multiple outs here. I am looking at creating something special and amazing.
you just can't imagine what it feels like when you place a card face down on the table, total commitment and the spectator names his/her freely mentally selected card, and you turn over the card on the table and it is the selection. I have built in a kicker to the routine which is still amazingly strong just in case I get it wrong. Audiences are very forgiving and always remember the endings If anyone has similar work that they are working on - please feel free to PM me. |

Daniel Madison has some interesting psychological forces in his book Psycho that are really nice. If you can find that, I recommend looking through it.

Craigboldy:
I see that this is your first post, so welcome to the Magic Café! You are starting the right way by asking a GREAT question! Let me assure you that you CAN plant the thought of a card in someone's mind, and it is ONE OF THE STRONGEST TRICKS YOU CAN DO IN MAGIC, IN MY EXPERIENCE. This takes skill, experience, guts and psychology but when done RIGHT......it will literally drive your audience crazy! This trick is best performed for a very small (1 to 4 people) audience under intimate conditions, and this is more of a "mentalism" type of effect, but often mentalism effects are MUCH STRONGER than magic effects in the eye and in the mind of the spectator, especially when you, the performer, NEVER TOUCHES THE PROPS (Cards, in this Case). I performed this for Rush Limbaugh's brother, "Doc" Limbaugh while in College in Cape Girardeau Missouri, and when HE turned over the top card of the deck (which I never touched and reminded him of that fact) and it was the card he THOUGHT of.....he literally ran screaming "Oh My God!" through the front door! THAT is the reaction you want when you do this trick the right way. If I may offer a suggestion: As others have stated in this thread, once you have a certain number of posts, (I think it's 100, but I could be wrong) you are allowed access to an area of The Magic Café which is called Secret Sessions. In my opinion, THAT is where you want to post this question. I won't tip methods here because I don't want to expose them. I will say this, however, others have mentioned "The Invisible Deck" and "The Brainwave Deck" which I consider "Outs" for this trick. Having said that, there is a stronger "Out" for this which is ideal IF you need it. The goal would be to NOT need "Outs" performing this. so, craigboldy, keep digging.......and you will hit GOLD! |

Well, in Daniel Madison´s anthology there´s a trick that involves the unconscius thinkingof the queen of hearts. In derren brown's Pure Effect, he teaches how to unconsciusly suggest 2 or 3 cards I think

Dani Daortiz can achieve just that, he can implant a card in a spectator's mind. I've seen him doing it, and I've done it myself. It's totally possible under the right conditions. And you do literally that: you implant a card in someone's mind and nobody notices it. Dani uses this technique to do a very impressive think of a card routine, but you should be able to use it as a "force of a thought card". |

Even though the OP has 'disappeared', the topic is worthwhile. As mentioned before, we're not talking supernatural... but trying to make the spectator think that they have actually thought of the card freely. The Invisible and Brainwave Deck were mentioned; but I sometimes mess with a little quick trick (don't know the name) using a very short card where you fan a display in front of them... and the short allows more of a glimpse to the spec than other cards. It's not perfect, but with practice its pretty good. Only problem is that its kind of a one-trick pony. btw thanx to Café folks for the references to Dani DaOrtiz and Derren Brown! Lynn

I have seen a Belgian magician, such as myself, perform an amazing routine where he had a card in his mouth the whole time and asked the spectator (written on papers) to name a card/any card. She first said Visa, but that was clearly a joke. When she said her card, he just took the card out of his mouth and it was the named card. Now I've guessed most of his performance and had a 2- hour conversation with him after it. Where we exchanged hints and tips to eachother. Only his secret to this one is one that had me going for months now, so finally I decided to ask for help from you guys about how he could've done it and also how I can learn it. By the way, for the ones who wonder, it was no assistant. It was someone who works at the bank where I've seen him perform it (the same where I work in).
We perform magic, not to convince people that magic exists, but to outsmart them... and they like it.
