DVDs in my opinion are easier to follow than a book

Joshua'a book is a great choice. It includes a DVD which discusses several of the effects in the book.

Wilson's and Jay's books are very good - I've gotten a lot out of them, but they may be overkill for your girl friend. Something a bit smaller and more direct might be more appropriate, such as Magic for Dummies. It has good variety(she can choose coins, cards, mentalism, food, office products.., easy to read.
If you know what type of magic she may be interested in, say money, then get her one of Fulve's Self Working Magic. These are good books, and she won't get discouraged by trying them. Then again, make sure you aren't projecting your interest onto her. Some will say they want to fool you, because they may feel inferior by always being fooled by you, or they just want to play along a little (but are not serious about doing magic) John
