****VERY IMPORTANT*********
If you can, let them draw on a card used in an effect and let them keep it afterward. I know it seems small, but this advice is HUGE.

Something I have found is that teenagers respond best. and handicapped kids. when my sister was in hospital, I wandered around intensive care doing card tricks to handicapped kids. I messed up the two card monte, and it still was a amazing, mainly becuase we both forgot what the cards were though...
I found that if you perform for kids under about 12, then they will notice something is wrong, and will point it out in that really loud voice that carries accross a room. only my thoughts though. |

Card magic kind of turns me off unless it is not really card magic, but extremely visual changes and vanishes. That is something you may want to pursue and add to your repitour (sp?)so you can use your deck skills in a very visual way for younger audiences..

I have found you can really hold their attention with a good "story" trick like "Cannibal Cards." Any over 4 can understand a card trick if it focus' simple ideas like changing colors or vanishes and appearances.

Keep it simple but do very visual things. try to incorporate a story or two into your magic.

I'm not very old myself(13). I do card magic for my friends who's ages range from 9-15 but I find that their younger siblings 4& up "get it" depending on how involved they get as well as visual recignization. for younger ones you want to keep them invalved so you don't lose them. There is also a program called the HEALING OF MAGIC with the IBM. magicains go into the hospitals and work with phisical theripists and patiants. I know that my IBM ring has two or three active magicians in the program you can go to the IBM website to get information on the program and how to sighn up. Good Luck and think magical thoughts. *ashley*

For younger audiences I use animal cards, pokemon trading cards, etc. and other things that they can understand. Playing cards might seems "too grown up" for them. Also telling a good story with the trick can make them understand it better. Anything visual works great. I've done simple card magic for children as young as 4 and 5 year olds, and it worked because of the story, the animals (young kids LOVE animals)and because they could clearly see what had occurred.
I also really loke the idea of getting the child to draw on the card. This adds a more "realistic" touch to the trick. that's just my 2 cents - Greg
Formerly, when religion was strong and science weak, men mistook magic for medicine; now, when science is strong and religion weak, men mistake medicine for magic.

I do Mental Photography for them. They can understand blank cards, then printed cards.

COgnitin and proper understanding of slightly complicated things starts at the age of 8. However, as generation shifts forth, some kids understand card magic even if they're only 6. Best effects for kids should involve a story in which they are familiar with. Involvement would be also great. Your Harry Potter thing is a nice one, since HP is really popular.
In our place, MOST of the kids are hecklers. In Philippines, that is. Card magic for youngsters isn't advisable here. -sighs- Good luck on your pace! |

Just an idea.
Use tricks that you can turn into a sort of game, let them win and act extraordinary baffled that they beat you, give them some sort of present for winning. And perhaps you could teach them a very basic trick...maybe a simple self working one. |

I show magic to my cousin and my friends brothers often without a problem who are 11. I think that ages 8+ is perfectly fine as that is when they get mature.
