Can someone explain the "luckiest night of my life" gag? I suspect it's a little before my time.

THANK YOU ShirtlessKirk, for posting this.
We got to see Ricky make a mistake and just keeping the flow going. As we were told as kids learning magic: "they don't know what you're going to do, so they don't know if you made a mistake". |

Well, um, alright, then it appears you get it. I'm not understanding the apparent confusion on your part.
Here's a fun game: contrast this performance the same sequence in his 52 Assistants show. Justin |

Honestly the reason I posted this was this was the first time I have seen Ricky Jay with long hair. I found it odd because I never would have imagined him with long hair. I suppose I'm something of a youngster (31) but the first time I saw a performance of Ricky Jay was his 52 assistants show that aired on HBO. Really wish they would release it on DVD, its my by far my favorite magic special. It is interesting to see even though there were changes in the routine it was essentially the same as it was a decade earlier.

I'll mention that I met Ricky Jay in person in the late 1970's when my full evening road show, Magic-Capades, played in his home town of Santa Rosa, California. He had very long hair at that time. If you want to see another clip of him doing the same routine with the long hair, he did it on one of the Doug Henning TV Specials.
In Santa Rosa Ricky came out with the cast of the show to have dinner in a restaurant, after seeing our show. One of my assistants at the time was Tim Wise who was very young, but was very skilled at Throwing Cards. He asked Ricky if they could go outside after dinner and throw some cards together. Unfortunately Ricky took it as a "challenge" and told Tim that if he wanted to see who could throw a card further, or with more accuracy he would have to put $5,000.00 on it. And so alas, we did not get to see Ricky scale any cards. (We saw Tim do it just about every day!) My feeling was that Ricky was probably more accurate at short distances, but that Tim might just might have beaten him for distance. And yes, I'm talking about the Tim Wise that today lives in Las Vegas and is close friends with Jeff McBryde.
