Perhaps I ignore it too much and give it a pass. However, sometimes we forget that lay people don't give us the same pass. Specific example: I started taking my wife to a touring full evening magic and variety show that comes through town. I've always like this show...for years upon years. After 2 year of going, my wife flatly refuses to go again as the cheese is like nails on a chalk board to her. Hopefully I've elevated myself above this but, hey, I may be deluding myself as well! |

I think this is not only the common perception among most lay people, but also amongst many entertainment buyers and clients. I hear form many of them that they would like good magic but despise the cheese factor of most magic performers. I'm not talking in the kiddie markets but corporate, colleges, schools and other professional markets.

It is an.all too common misperception. Or should I say accurate observation?

I don't think this movie will do much for magic either way - mainly because I don't think many people will see it. I was sorry that it wasn't better considering the potential of the premise. The real problem with it is that it is entirely out of touch with the genre it is poking fun at. For satire to work it has to be very close to the real thing but just a notch or two into the ridiculous. Although Jim Carrey had some good moments as a Blaine/Angel inspired character, other than that the movie didn't seize onto the truthful material that really could have fueled a very funny take off. As an example, the computer-generated magic tricks bring the movie into a realm shaped by special effects rather than the actual style and mannerisms of magic. Even audiences not intimately familiar with a particular genre will have a sense of when it is authentic. This is Spinal Tap is a good example of the type of satirical comedy that works much better than this one. The movie concludes by showing the method to a grand illusion that I felt was actually offensive to watch - not to mention entirely preposterous.
I remember a magic-related episode of The Simpsons that I felt did a much better job with this type of material. And if you've never watched these videos about "Curtis Angel," they are worth checking out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLvjzLihMR4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy_75WoonX0 |

I watched this yesterday. Spoilers in this review.
I had enjoyed The Office and had heard Steve's character was much the same here. Unfortunately this was true. I found no one in this movie to really be likeable. Any conflict was built upon characters that I despised so much that I actually wanted to see them fail. Being an entertainer is a gift few recieve and if you are an *** about it then you deserve to be pushed aside. You had your chance. I was ok with the stereotypical beginning, I expected it. But to gain my generic sympathy for a child only to immediately sweep any of that away 5 minutes later is a waste of my time. Why make me care to begin with? If this was the story of a young boy who grew into an amazing magician but was sadly a little by the numbers I really would have enjoyed it. This new street magic thing comes in and pushes him out so he goes back to the beginning to find his roots. Nope! This is a movie about a selfish man who loses it all and does anything he can to get it all back. He becomes a pathetic wash up but that ploy only works if we care about him to start. A movie that takes place in the world of secrecy and magicians needs a strong protagonist. Someone the audience can relate to and root for to succeed. I wanted to see them all fail. Perhaps a juggling act would get the job they all wanted I'm sure that would have been awesome. In the end everything works out. Bert gets his partner back for no reason. He gets the girl because he's the main character and every main character needs to get the girl. He gets everything he wanted by literally abusing his audience in a way so dumb I wanted to turn off the film. I really did not like this movie. Dylan Gelinas |

Saw it yesterday (glad I paid matinee price).
This movie will do nothing for magic. I don't suppose it ever intended to, since it could have very well have had any profession (on which to pin stereotypes) as its vehicle...lounge singers, acrobats...dentists? Simply an hour and a half of cookie cutter "comedy" to bolster future DVD rentals. I had imagined Steve Buscemi to steal the show, as he often does in his Coen Bros. films. This, however, is not from the Coen brothers, and his role is very tight and unimaginative. What is worth the soon-to-be $1 rental is Jim Carrey. His mash of Blain/Angel to the nth degree of ridiculousness is what brings the laughs. Everyone else is wasted. The more ridiculous thing, as Dylan pointed out above, is the resolution. If I had imagined it beforehand I would have walked. And if you're looking for feats of magic, don't. There are a couple of finger manipulations, and mention of a couple of sleights that make you feel like a special insider, since no one else would recognize. Most, however, are over-the-top digital works that no one would think genuine. Most reviewers have given it a C+. I think that is rather generous. |

I'm going to drop by the theater tomorrow to catch a showing. This sounds exactly like the kind of thing that will reignite my passion for magic! (sarcasm) In all seriousness, this is pretty much what I expected. It looks like the kind of movie I'd demand a refund for even after the shady guy down the street gave it to me on a bootleg DVD! |

While the movie was slow in spots, I thought the movie was quite funny.
My wife and daughter enjoyed the film and at times were laughing out loud. Gerry |

I saw it yesterday. I enjoyed it but it's not the greatest thing I've ever seen. That said, I think it's one of those movies that will get better with repeat viewings and you pick up on more funny lines.

The TT is in every magic kit, even I have been fooled by the TT from another magician.
I've used the TT for 40 years and still one of the best. I taught the TT and had it painted red to show, it's not the TT but the way it is presented. This did not bother me one bit.

The TT has been exposed so many times it is not worth worrying about. I just performed it and some one even commented. they said in the movie they showed the kid using a rubber thumb but I have no idea how you just did that.
whats to worry about. as for the movie I have given it some more thought. the reality is for me at least that the cursing and the sex talk just had no place in the movie especially as the previews kind of billed it as a family film which this is most certainly not. second the subject of magic alone says "kids" and families but again this is not that type of film. further more I have thought thru some of the jokes and funny moments and yes there were some but over all I was just bummed that they made such a crappy movie based on our profession. even the critics say it was a flop and the news reported it barely broke 11 million $$ this weekend. that does not even cover the $20 million they have to pay Jim Carry!! overall it was a disappointment. now I am looking forward to seeing the next installment of magic themed movies Now you See me

This movie is very, very bad. The only bright spots are a handful of Jim Carrey funny moments. Based on the popularity of David Blaine & Criss Angel spoofs on youtube, this should've been the focus of the comedy.
Carrell is woefully underdeveloped, Buscemi is limited and uninteresting (almost never say that about him) and Wilde is trotted out as objectifying eye candy and a really huge missed opportunity to make clever satire out of a male-dominated industry. The entire movie is underwhelming. I feel confident in saying that if you've seen the trailer, you've actually seen the best version of the movie. |
