Hi all again..
Need some help with this effect. I actually picked it up from "Bob King’s" Lecture last year.. the real name of the trick is "Mystery box". Basically it’s a keychain with a box (plastic) that has a drawer and you can show it b4 showing everyone that it’s empty.. This is how the effect goes.. spectator holds this keycase or you can leave it on a table... spectator selects any card.. signs it... Then magician takes it back.. it’s mixed into the deck.. magician puts the deck behind his back and tells them he will try to find their card behind his back... then magician bring’s the deck into view and he has their selected card on the top of the deck.. and, well it’s not their card.. So he mention’s that they have been holding the keycase the entire time and he hasn’t touched it.. etc. Now he opens up the drawer part of the keycase and finds a facedown folded up in quarters card in the keycase. Magician tosses the card into his hand.. spectator opens up the folded card.. and it’s their card with their signature on it. K now I’ve had a lot of great success with this effect.. the keycase is totally examinable b4 and after the effect.. If any of you have seen this effect or have it, there is a part in the routine.. when the deck is "behind your back" and you are supposedly trying to find their card.. any idea’s on working out this part of the trick.. I mean not having the "something" in your hand b4 you show the box with a card in it?? Maybe having your hands shown empty as you go for the keycase??? Anyways.. I just thought I’d ask in here email me your thoughts and ideas and again if you want more details on this effect .. email!!!! Thank’s again all :):) Mike |

MIke,
I saw this in Bob's lecture. I'm not sure you can eliminate the "something" as it needs to be there when you tip the box up. Although, I don't suppose it would be impossible to have the "something" in a sort of Tenkai pinch position so you can, at least, show your palms empty before reclaiming it as you reach for the box with the other hand. Larger action covering smaller etc.?

It is always that 'something' which makes the C2B something that people worry about. In the very near future, I will be putting out a version where you do not touch the card in the box, allowing the person who signed it to remove it for themselves.

Your hand doesn't need to be shown empty, if you coordinate your movements! Just rehearse it until you are completely comfortable with it, then rehearse it for a couple more weeks. By then, you should be able to do it with no problem.

Sounds like mystery box routine. Is this method better than the mystery box, or is this just the economy way to perform "card to impossible location" without having to spend on expensive props?

If you learn a good secret card fold - complete with motivated "misdirection" - then you won't have to go behind your back and you won't have to worry about them wondering what might be in your hands after you've put them out of sight (for no good or believable reason).
