I thought I'd share a little experiment that I'm undertaking. More and more people are taking photos and videos of my performances. This is fine with me and most people are polite enough to ask. What I would like, however, is these photos and videos to be shared on my facebook page. This would achieve three goals:
1. Get more photos, video and testimonials. 2. Get more "likes" on my page. 3. Be able to better stay in touch with people who like my magic. I started asking people to share the pics on my facebook page but it gets cumbersome to find me among all the other "Michael Carduccis" out there (apparently there are a bunch!) I just ordered a bunch of cheap business cards from vistaprint with the below design. (just a QR code on the back) These are very different to my actual business cards and I am not going to hand these out willy-nilly like the desperate Facebook marketers we all know. Instead if someone shoots some cool video, or a few pictures (or just really enjoyed my show) I'll ask them if they'd be willing to share the videos/pics/feedback on my FB page. IF they say yes, I'll hand them a card and thank them sincerely. I'll keep you posted as to how this goes. Click here to view attached image. |

Cool. I do the same thing only make a joke of it during my show. during one of my routines it never fails that the cameras and camera phones and videos come out! so I joke at the end of the routine with the person - saying it will be on youtube by 5 tonight! gets a laugh. and many have posted them to youtube.
recently yes I started following up with actually instead of youtube join my fan page and post them there. that is what I am now pushing and while I have gotten more fans and comments I have not gotten the pics yet. the card idea is nice -- may I borrow that. although they don't have trouble finding me usually. sam

Please by my guest and use this idea, artwork etc. I might put up a link to generate this artwork and QR code for these cards if they prove to be successful.
Ultimately I want to see a shift from people already doing what they're doing: posting "there's an awesome magician at this party I'm at" and instead post "there's an awesome magician, Michael Carducci, at this party I'm at." I think the tagging and sharing will help with that. In addition to the card making it easy for people to get to your page, it's also a physical reminder to do it later if they said the would. |

Thanks.
I am not doing to many private home parties any more but when I do this is a good thing. I would use it for my school shows as well. I actually have been encouraging schools to take video and pictures to capture the awesome moments in the show. the schools love the idea. they don't realize how big our show is and how many cool KODAK moments there are in the show. sam

Kodak? What is that? Lol
Michael, I have been using a very similar idea for about eight months now but have a couple strategies I have combined it with to maximize the results. PM me for more info. BTW, we met a couple years ago in Daytona. Me, you, Kostya and Kevin had breakfast at Denny's the morning after the convention. You had told a pretty amazing story about a not-so-public bar in Italy |

I "like" the idea! I have public shows with about 500 people in attendance and I sign autographs afterwards. I was thinking of something similar where I have a card that I sign that has my business info and Facebook page on. Another thing I thought would be great is to show a magic trick at the show, and let them know I will teach them how to do it if they like me on Facebook. I just don't know how to technically do it.

That's definitely been my problem. I list my facebook URL, but find that half the people understand that you need to go to a browser, and half don't. And I'm sure another percentage won't know what qr code is either. I haven't wanted to list all 3 on my business card because I don't want it to be an information overload/look desperate. The good thing about FB is you can measure easily, the bad part is it makes me think about the numbers too much.

Hey Michael,
I am a big fan of Facebook. It is difficult to get audience members to comment and post photos on your fan page. The way that I promote this is with a souvenir programs. Before the show starts I choose a volunteer "usher". I have them go though a quick job interview, and "hire" them to pass out the souvenir programs to every kid and parent in the audience. For large audiences of 300 or so, I "hire" 3 or 4 ushers. These programs serve a coupe of purposes, number 1 is to get my contact info into the hands of everyone at the show. It also provides more audience volunteers, (before the show even starts) the "ushers" are instructed to yell, "Programs! get your programs here!" I mention before the show that I have an important video and photography policy. I say in a stern voice, "If anyone is caught taking photos or videos during the show they are.....welcome to do so, and if you are able post of photo on my Facebook page during the show I will give your kids a magic wand." This is fun when this works and before your show is over there are photos and comments about the show on Facebook. Even with the urging for them to post photos I only get one every few shows. Sometimes I will get some video, and I do often get comments. Sorry the image of the program is so small. This site would not let me upload it as it was to big. I tried to re-size it but this is all I could do. I will work on it in the morning. Reviews and likes on your facebook page are great, but I think enticing your clients to post a review on THEIR facebook page is an ingenious idea. The average facebook user has 190 friends. The trouble is how do you know you've succeeded? Unless you're facebook friends with the client you wont see it, right?
I'd also like to get my customers to review me on Yelp, YP, Google, Yahoo, etc. This of course you can see and track. Any ideas on how to accomplish this feat? Great thread! Thanks for sharing.

That is a fabulous idea. What a way to get the right kind of people as fans. I like everything about this idea. I'm ordering me some of those cards right away. Thank you very much Michael

Al, Thank you for the kind words!
One thing I neglected to mention. The QR code on the back goes to an intermediary page that will give the user the choice to launch the facebook app or browse to the web page. I got it here: http://www.qrstuff.com/ I've attached the design for the back. Click here to view attached image. |

This is a great idea. I don't know why I don't come up to the photographer and get in touch with them later... just to even get the materials... I don't know why I havn't thought of that.
Thank you! |

If you want to engage people it's probably better to do it there but a standard QR code can't always launch the app and even if it did, not everyone has it. The idea is to lower the barrier to entry for people and engage them in the way they prefer. Instead of a qr code that just goes to facebook.com/MichaelCarducciMagic (which may require them to logon in the browser when they're already logged in on the FB app) or a QR that goes directly to the FB app but doesn't work on some phones, or when they don't use the app, I got a QR code that was the best of both words. I went to qrstuff.com to generate the code. Under step 1 "Data Type" choose "Facebook" Under step 2, choose "link" and enter the link to your fb page. When you generate the QR code, qrstuff provides an intermediary page where you can choose to launch it on your fb app or inside your web browser. Try it out with my qr code: Click here to view attached image. |
