Hi, could someone please tell me if it is necessary to use the cards that come with the effect? Could you write the list on a business card or in a pad instead?
cheers, Ray |

Yes, you could do it yourself, but you probably won't want to. The physical set is very well done.

Thank you all for the feedback. I placed an order last night. I'm curious to learn the method and see how easily it might be adapted to other themes.

...which may well bring up the idea of: if Steve's Ebook has new effects, uses and applications of the principle, it may be worth publishing. Are there enough side thoughts, variations and ideas to warrent one? Steve and Jim might get want to get their heads together.

This is a really brilliant method. A couple of important things to note: Firstly, the spectator doesn't have to read out all the titles listed. He just needs to include the actual title in those that he does choose to read out. Secondly, the titles can be read out in any order the spectator chooses. These two features make this a real mind buster and should, in my opinion, be subtly emphasised if you are performing a "lying" themed effect.

The set I ordered has arrived.
a very well produced set of props. Very nicely presented. There is such a lot to be developed with the thinking behind this. Maybe the book will come out. Maybe not. but I have to say. Nice work Jim steve |

I received mine yesterday. Here's a mini review.
Pros: 1. The method is ingenious. Nothing is completely undetectable but this is as close as it gets. 2. The method is such that I can imagine coming up with lots of different variations/themes. 3. The instructions are brief and don't spoon feed you a performance. It forces you to be a creative performer and not a parrot. It takes some creativity to overcome the... Cons (IMO): 1. It would be more attractive and more logical if the images used were all actual movie posters (not a combination of posters, DVD covers, etc). 2. There are a few too many odd and obscure movies. Anime is obscure. The chosen anime movies even more so. 3. With a little thought, the lists on the back could have included motivation to make the cards normal items. As designed, they are definitely props created for the purpose of a magic/mentalism routine. Jim Kleefeld, if you're reading this, I have two comments: 1. Thank you for creating and releasing this fine effect! 2. If you want to collaborate on a Cinema Verite II (or variations), do contact me as I would be happy to contribute my thoughts. This would be a fun project. |

I neglected to add that overall I am very satisfied with this purchase!
Just in case it's not obvious from my review above. |

In addition to what has been written on this thread, I have heard on the grapevine this is a very good effect and went ahead and ordered. Jim sent it very quickly - and it arrived in time for a special event being held, which was much appreciated.
However the effect is really impressive. The idea involved is very simple and straightforward but it is a real baffler and with a good entertainment element included ie listening to the way a spectator reads through a list picking titles at random. The quality of the cards are superb and I can see this is an effect I will be using a lot, whether in a one to one situation or for a larger gathering. Another aspect I like is that with a bit of effort you can adapt the theme to suit your audience and so use something else other than film titles. I have already come up with several theme ideas I am keen to develop. This is certainly one of my best purchases of the year. |

This is a fantastic effect. Original, and hard-hitting. I just wish the movies were a bit higher-profile. When you ask someone to picture a scene from the movie (should you go that route), it would be nice if people were actually familiar with the film.

I initially wished for more familiar movies, and have suggested to Jim a more classic set, and I know he is thinking about it AND perhaps smaller sets for walk around.
Nevertheless, the present set offers a presentational advantage. People are engaged when I explain the background for the "Steampunk" genre of films--most of which they have not seen or perhaps even heard of. I hand each of three spectators about a third of the 32 film posters, and ask them to choose one that they have NOT seen but which looks interesting to them, and to imagine what it might be about. Then, as they read off titles, I am trying to read into their imagination, and what their choice might indicate about them, as well as identify their chosen film. George |

This has passed the wife test - twice! She was so intrigued the first time, she asked me to do it again, and which you can do with Cinema Verite, and was very impressed both times. Also it's a delightful effect to perform and generates great reactions.

If it, in fact, even passes the wife test, Kleefeld has produced a bona fide miracle!

This is a killer effect.
Even performance weary magi have no idea at all. As mentioned earlier in this thread In have been using this system for quite a while now. I have contacted Jim and others and it looks like I will continue with the Ebook mentioned above. Thanks Jim for some great props. Steve |

If Pack Small Play Big is your mantra then this rocks.
To make it pack even smaller (thinner) I carry them in a DVD case rather than the one they came in. Fits the theme nicely. I will possibly print some cover art for the DVD sleeve when I get the time. Steve |

The method for this originated with Hiroshi Kondo in 2006 with his Tenyo effect.

Sir Pharaul, thank you for this information. Would you be so kind as to share the name of the Tenyo effect in which this principle was introduced.
