I'm actually NOT new to magic, just to the forums.
I've been practicing and performing casually for 25+ years, but always VERY casually. Though I was an active IBM member for 5 years as a teen, I fell out of magic for a long long time when I got involved in music (performing, promoting, freelance journalism etc...) but have recently come back to magic after rediscovering my love for it. Also since music was a hobby (thAt I happened to make a few bucks off of here and there) for so long... That now that music is my career (talent buyer at a 600 capacity night club/venue) I figured I had time and energy to rediscover my old hobby/love. So with all that in mind, I AM a newbie in some respects. Anyway, I've seen a bunch of negative comments on here in various places regarding Magic Makers and Rob Stiff, but nothing really comprehensive. I've purchased several items from them (their DVD library, a few effects) and with the exception of Svengali and Stripper decks of VERY dubious quality that came with the matching DVDs (and it didn't matter, I have a half dozen Bike versions of each), I've never really had any issues with the quality of any of their products. But my understanding is that they are marketing several knockoff effects and if that is the case then I'd prefer to not continue to buy anything from them. The DVDs I have are well shot and decently put together (especially the Cups & Balls one) if not a little rudimentary...even for me. And they all at least SEEM to be crediting others for certain effects and moves and bits of business on those DVDs. So it seemed like they were at least making an effort to be on the up and up. But the things I e heard mentioned here are making me believe the contrary. So...what's the real scoop? Are they stealing effects? Are they really manufacturing poor equality knockoffs of equipment not in public domain? Any info would be great. I just want to be as informed as possible and definitely want to stop purchasing and using their products if they are, indeed, shysters. Thanks all! |

I've purchased several of their DVDs and like you, found them to be well-produced and enjoyable. On the flip side, I've purchased a few of their props and found them to be cheaply made. I've heard they did produce some knock-offs, but that buzz seems to have died down recently.
My advice is to always buy from the original creator (or an authorized dealer) whenever possible. Knock-off props while less expensive, end up shortchanging everyone involved, including yourself.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
