Friend of the family Justin Flom released a new version of his effect this week. Now you get to reveal not only a picture with the playing cards but also a spectators selected and signed card. Words don't do it justice, check out the trailer - http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/3428

Picked this up back in February and it really is great. As much as I loved the original, I think the signed card aspect really pushes this over the top.

Hi Eric,
Reading your various posts makes me think that we often have the same taste. I wonder though: How (et when ?) do you perform this effect (or cardistry 1) ? The whole "turned over giant close-up mat" aspect of the trick makes it look quite impractical... The effect does look awesome though ! J. |

That's a beautiful looking effect. VERY clever doing a signed card. If I worked professionally ( having the mat with me ), I'd pick it up. Real Workers have all the fun.

After version one came out didn't someone mention using repositionable spray on a flat surface? I suspect that is easier to see and cart around for practical purposes.

I think Justin talks about how you can do it upright in your show on a pad of paper in the new dvd.
I perform the effect in my show and I have a canvas upright on a easel and plays amazing! |

Seems to work just fine on the back of my normal close up mat if you turn the mat sideways. Agreed, it's not the most practical trick in the world, but reset is pretty easy and I suppose you could do it walkaround if you carry a mat and have table space. But if you don't have the table space, I agree this would be for formal shows only.

Didn't like the original because of the f***e. This is much clever revelation...
I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death my right to say "scr*w you" if you persist. [Voltaire ]

If your f***e is a good one, then I think the original is a more magical effect, as the spectator's card is actually part of the picture in the same style as the remainder. Non-magicians will wonder how you could have had a pre-designed picture for the very card they selected. In the newest version, the question is simply how you could have gotten their card into the correct position.
The advantage of CA2 is that it will allow repeat showings to the same audience and eliminates a move that some might find difficult to perform convincingly. But if these are not major considerations, CA1 is, in my opinion, a much better effect. |

Nice effect but I agree with lumberjohn, I think ca1 is more magical. I really like it but as I never use a close up mat its not really for me.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

I agree that ca1 may be more magical/astonishing but I think ca2 might be more entertaining and will prob bring some laughter to your audience. It just seems fun to have your drawing appear as a painting.

In general, finding ways to make flat surface/on the table effects play vertically is good, but it makes even more sense with the "art" framing of this effect. Is this what you were referring to Stucky? I was assuming on a flat, horizontal surface, and just spraying for the friction, but upright, and the spray keeping the cards up is a great idea. Playing it upright in a more formal show makes me wasn't to seriously consider this. I liked it originally, but just never really saw me performing it, but this motivates me to try and find a presentation for it. Quote:

If you had multiple reveal cards, you would just have to swap out that one if you were thinking about repeat viewings, etc. It definitely changes it from more of a sort of "prediction" type reveal to a "found card" reveal between the two versions. With CA2 all the other cards that make the "painting" are more just window dressing, and simply frame their actual card, where as CA1 suggests an entire piece of "art" with contains your prediction.

Dumb question for an old thread, but what size close up mat is recommended for this?

Andi over at Vanishing Inc has a magic square routine that uses cards. The trick itself is horrible but the kit includes a special repositionable paper that he attaches to a cork board/white board. It would be perfect for this because you could hold the board vertically as you "paint" the cards. Wish he would release just the special paper.

I agree with Eric, the Gladwin display would really bring this up a notch. (Great idea)
