Hi there
I am bringing my wiz kote out of retirement and although I have tons of electric matches and smoke stuff I have heard that there is some new laws or changes to what you can use. I use fire in all my shows already so I am not really worried about it BUT when I run out of what I have I would like to know what is currently being used. I am looked at theatre effects and done some searching but nothing concrete has shown up. thanks sam

How about those fake cigarettes, they blow water vapor that looks like smoke, maybe one can be adapted. Or I think the magic trick called smoke works in a similar way.

I've used flash powder/black powder for years with no bad results....once I figured out the proper amount!!!! After having George refurbish my Wiz Kote I switched to Theatre FX smoke powder. The same powder that Chance Wolf suggests for the Cellulator. It can be found here http://www.theatrefx.com/store/commerce......._related I believe it's classified as non explosive. I find that it burns longer then the flash powder. You can ignite it and it seeps out of the holes in the Wiz Kote nicely.

Maybe I should rephrase the question.
I thought I had read some where that the electric matches are no longer legal. maybe I am wrong. I will contact theatre effects and talk with them. its been over 2 years since I ordered anything from theatre effects. thanks for the comments sam

Sam, Theatre FX sells a lead that's NOT an electric match. It works the same way with the Wiz Kote though. I believe they're called igniters. Here' s the link http://www.theatrefx.com/store/commerce.cgi?product=igniters. You want the Surefire Igniters. I switched ove to these a few years ago and have great success with them. They're very dependable.

As the creator of the Wiz Kote ( Burnt Shoe Trick) after almost 20 years....I have finally found a way around the live fire problem to make it smoke.
And I am making some additional improvements to the box. The new Burnt Shoe Box will be available through me within a month. To answer your question Sam.....you might be able to adapt the one you have.....send me a private message.

As the REAL creator of the O.O.P.S. machine (as published by Genii Magazine in August of 1985) my original method of performance used no fire or real smoke at all. The illusion of smoke was created by my waving my hands about and coughing and complaining about the smoke and the smell of burning rubber (which many people in the audience began to also "smell" and react to in much the same way as you react to someone scratching his finger down a chalkboard). The flashing red lights and buzzer was all that was needed to create the panic. Then when the burnt sneaker came crashing to the floor on opening of the box, it was well coated with baby powder which added to the illusion of smoke. I picked the shoe up with a pair of tongs, acting as if it was still on fire and pretending to blow out sparks, which of course sent the powder into the air.
When I gave Art Khan of Xanadu Magic of Jersey City, NJ the sole right to manufacture and sell the effect (1984), he changed the design of the box into one that resembled the Jimmy King Indian Dove Chest, so the shoe or sneaker would no longer fall out of the box when it was opened. Art was the one who suggested putting the flashpot on top to create real smoke (it was all legal back in those days). http://wizkidzinc.com/photo12.htm One of our last photos of Art when we visited him to discuss his production of the OOPS Machine in 1984. He passed away a few years later.

I love the idea of using baby powder and tong to pick up the burnt shoe. I purchased the OOPS machine from http://www.magicnook.com/
best 5 bucks you will ever spend and the entire site is filled with amazing products for just a few dollars. |
