Many apologies if this has been covered but I have been searching for most of this evening and can't find anything on the topic. Which books DVDs etc would you experts recommend for a card/ rope/ cups and balls guy to start adding some mind reading/ mentalism into his routine?
Many thanks Adam |

Hi Adam,
Before any missiles launch, allow me to suggest that your question is likely to incite the wrath of many Mentalists, who feel, very strongly, that what we do is a specific craft that demands grounding in foundational principles (in both learning and performing) and, as such, should not be simply 'added' to a magic performance. e |

You might find the following useful. It is my list, with commentary, of what I consider to thirty-nine of the most important books on mentalism. It's an excerpt from my book "Fundamentals of Professional Mentalism" and it is free to read at:

Bob, did you ever have an updated list of your recommended books? I remember reading that Switchcraft would be included in that list, but never heard of any other books.

The first topic on Penny is---
The Café and mentalism - a growing concern (Mr Amazing) Why not have another topic " SUGGESTED READING BEFORE POSTING ON PENNY" about basic books to be read before posting on Penny (or Inner Thoughts). Bob's list is almost complete.Other suggestions updating Bob's could be added there. It saves newbies a lot of time in taking the right steps in the right direction.....and avoids jamming the site with topics like this. Any opinions ? |

Well, first, I have no intention of upsetting mentalists or any other performers (I hope no mentallist will object to being called a performer ).
Secondly, unfortunately I get an error message when I click on Bobs link. I guess he is just messing with my mind. |

I AM PSYCHIC!!!!! The one trick dvds are finally sinking in!
EVERY time I see a thread like this I can accurately predict the post count of the OP (+/- a few) I will tell you how, this is the real work, $199, 4 page ebook (1 title, 1 contents, 1 advert for another thing I'm selling) I'm working on knowing exactly what is written in the first post on each thread but that will be v2.0 and $400 so act quickly, only 5 copies being sold as it's limited edition and will be with distributers in 2 months

Hmmm. Am I amused or disappointed? Not sure. Oh, wait a minute, I get it, mentalism isn't anything like magic tricks. It is a skill that you have to teach yourself. Or maybe it isn't tricks at all. David Blaine & Derren Brown don't do tricks; they really can read minds.
Anyway, thank you to all who have given helpful advice |

Adam-
Somehow a stray apostrophe got attached to the end of my link above. Here is the correct link: http://www.lybrary.com/thirtynine-steps-mentalism-a-10.html I think you may find it useful. Good thoughts, Bob |

Excellent, thanks Bob. The link now works and after a quick read, I have a few great pointers. I obviously need to read it a few more times.
Much appreciated. Adam |

Buy yourself a couple of quick hits - a couple of DVDs with good reviews along with a couple of books.
People get bogged down in books and never go anywhere. Think of the DVDs as a treat, and you can have the treat after you have done your homework. A lot of the DVD material will be in the books, but what it will do is show you how they made it up-to-date, and why you liked it enough to purchase it. Apply this to the other stuff in the books. The most difficult thing about recommending books is that it's not all relevant to everyone and it's a lot of information to take in. Try some stuff, don't worry if you don't like it, try something else, you will find the way if you want to. I second Bob's suggestion of Osterlind Mind Mysteries, get number one and try them all out, you might not like all the routines but you will learn something from that. I think it will get you started quicker than a book in the first instance. Do what makes you happy!
