Stuck at work with a tornado warning going on. Let's hope it doesn't turn into anything worse than the butt-load of rain and hail I see out the window. Work's over in an hour: hope I'm able to go home soon.
Have fun wherever you are! John

Well, be safe. Weather a few hundred km south of you is sunny and lovely.

Daughter just called from the Chicago area, she is worried (although I do not remember tornados usually hitting major downtown areas like the Loop in Chicago).

Don't know about Illinois, but at least Edmonton escaped with only a scare, some hail and a ton of rain.
This was slightly south of the city. And this was on the way through.

I grew up in Tornadoville. We lived in Key Largo for 3 years and were there for the freaky hurricane season. I was nowhere near as scared. I have been in each and to me it is the suddenness of a tornado that is frightening. The way you know a tornado is there is your roof is gone. Nobody has to be able to describe what the hurricane sounded like. You have many days to evacuate generally. Prepare and such.
Problem is hurricanes can spin off tornados. I joke here when we have rain storms. I say when the weatherman feels the need to name the storm get back to me. I love storms. The absolute power of nature and all that.

I lived in Hong Kong for almost three years and hurricanes and their offspting are called typhoons in that part of the world. It can get confusing in defining cyclones, tornados, hurricanes and typhoons. But they all carry the same threats to we occupying the planet.
Living on Stanley Beach on Hong Kong Island we learned to prepare each season with plenty of masking tape to secure all glass windows, doors, etc. from shattering and preventing injury from glass missiles in our flats during a bad storm. We never had hailstorms there though. And never had glass shattered, despite several cat 3 and up typhoons in the South Cnina Sea when we were there. I'll admit that I agree with Danny above, I love storms. They're awesome. But I also respect the power of nature and wouldn't do something so ill advised as to chase one or not seek cover in an evacuation. Here's to the coming storms passing over you in their paths safely!

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Seriously? You're going to play your stupid take things out of context games? And you go dig up a 4 year old thread to do it?
Looks like you just have no ability to learn. Working on your next ban? Play your games with someone else, quit stalking me. It never works out well for you.

Wishing you and your family the best. Stay safe. Mother Nature can be beautiful, and she can also be deadly. I hope you all get through it OK.

My hair's still a bit messy, though.

I know Maria passed over the islands on its way to Puerto Rico. The news people did a story on a father who's daughter is volunteering on the islands as a medical tech. He can't find her. He's called her cell so often, he's filled her voice box to capacity.
I hope he gets ahold of her soon. https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-int......truction It's looks like Florida will get a break. Unless THIS one defies predication and goes in an odd direction too. With luck, it will keep going out to sea. It MIGHT hug the coast and hit someplace like the Carolinas or VA or even get up as far as RI. (But by then, it will certainly have downgraded in the colder Atlantic water.)

I am concerned. But, as I've never had to face a class 4 or 5 hurricane, I don't think I need to be "scared."

As I said, I've been through 2s and 3s. Never been in anything where they said we had to evacuate.
Still don't know about Maria. There's still no indication that she's going to hit the coast, much less where.
