Mr Youell,
Just curious to know what were your biggest obstacles (technical, psychological, plots, character development, etc.)during your development as a magician and how did you overcome them? |

Ego. Once you learn to extricate your ego from your
performance than you will be able to take any situation you encounter and make it fun for the audience. Unfortunately, all magicians start in magic by using it as a replacement for social skills and as a way to validate themselves. Once you get over that, then the possibilities are endless. But it's not easy to get over it. Allow me to give you an illustration of the advantages: If your self-worth is not attached to your performance, then your reaction to a situation in which you've screwed-up will be to make it funny. Because, after all, your mission is to entertain your audience, not feed your ego. Not attaching your self-worth or ego to your permance also eliminates fear, nervousness and allows you to accept and use critiques in an exponentially effective manner. Steven Youell |

AMEN! Well said, sir! Unfortunately, you're probably preaching to the choir--those who "get it" already know it and those who don't probably never will...

Funny how the really important lessons like the one you described apply not just within the context of magic but within the broader arena of LIFE.
