I haven't been overly successful with card tricks and kids. That means nothing, of course, more experienced people can do it! I guess the plots have to just be obvious and distinct: like (for example) the four robbers, or a three card monte, etc. These tricks are visual, and include either a story (four robbers) or audience participation (three card monte).
Otherwise, I find things like sponge balls/bunnies, the handkerchief mouse, etc, good with kids. |

I have a daughter turning 10 and do a lot of volunteer work with the Girl Scouts. Doesn't make me an expert- but I do have a good amount of experience with them. Sponge Balls and bunnies are the best, handkerchief mouse. Anything cute like that. Coins, money, rubber bands. Magic Drawing Board. Cups and Balls. Probably the most important thing is having fun and make sure they like you. And never let them see you sweat! |

I had this same dilemma a few months ago. I had the comedy funnel, comedy egg can and abunch of stuff ready to go. It was a party for girls ages 8 - 12. After many conversations here on the Café I decided NOT to ditch the cards/coins and Im so gladd I didn't. What I learned is that kids are maturing at a faster rate than ever before. They want to be treated like adults. Treat them like a baby and they WILL eat you alive. Keep it fun, interactive and "Impossible". The most childish thing I did with them is the vanishnig milk pitcher which went over well. I did a "danger monte" (Kuffs), some not-to-gross stuff like mint through neck, etc. I did a nice ID routine, Lasso Card, In A Flash, etc.
The same father contacted me for another gig for her sister (around the same age) but I was already booked that day. I received a text from the father sayng "too bad you couldn't make it .. the other magician was BRUTAL. He didn't even do one card trick. My girls didn't have a good time at all. He did this stupid appearing cane which was cool but it wouldve been cooler if he vanished it..etc". Thus, my advice would be to stick witht he classics (linking rings, newspaper tears, sponge balls, silks, etc). Bring your best magic and perform as if they were fully grown (minus anything inappropriate obviously). Leave the kiddy stuff for the 3 - 7 year olds. |
