UncleLar,
Great idea to use the box to hold a deck or two. KJ |

One way to do this with the u.c.c.u. is to have any card chosen and signed. Then placed back in the deck, the card is controlled and put in the utility. The deck is then handed back to the spec. To see if they can find their card. Which they won't be able to. Take back the deck and as you act surprised and wonder what or where their card is you steel the card behind the deck and cop it to you're pocket. Now you remind them of the emergency box and card that has been in front of them the whole time. You secretly m.f. the card explain how loosing their card is certainly an emergency as you reveal their signed card from a clear box that you have not been near since you laid it down.

UncleLar,
I tried using the box as a card box and the cards don't fit. They are too wide. KJ |

You'd also have to do some juggling to get the gimmick set if you carried deck(s) in it. But, conceptually, I think it's a good idea. I might try to make one myself using the second gimmick (my pockets are already full of too much crap and, if I could stash a couple of decks with this, it would really help). |

This is the box using a yellow lined index card for the revelation.
Thanks to Jerry for idea of using a colored card so it shows up better. This is how I plan to use for awhile I think. Click here to view attached image.

I still struggle a bit with justifying the presence of the box, so I tried the following this evening (it seemed to work well). In addition to having the card in plain view at the start, I had a crayon in the box (crayons fit perfectly). When it came time to have the card signed, I simply asked if anyone had a crayon. Of course, no one does. So I announced "No. That's ok, I have an emergency crayon box", thus justifying both the box and the emergency label. Since the crayon stands tall in the box, it can be easily reached and handed to the spectator for them to sign their card without disturbing the gimmick. After the card is signed, telling the spectator to put the crayon back in the box also provides a moment where the signed card can be controlled.
Later on, at the proper moment, the box can also become "an emergency card box". Since crayons and cards both normally come in boxes, the double use of an "emergency box" seems to better justify the box's presence. As a side benefit, I also found that the crayon in the box provided a bit of extra assistance in securing the gimmick during transport. |

Personally I can't imagine asking a spectator to sign a card with a crayon. My Clarity box hasn't arrived yet but I don't feel that you have to justify it straight away. I would just put it on the table, say nothing about it and carry on with my act then bring attention to it when I come to use it.
I use a chop cup but not straight away so I just put it down on the table ready to use when I come to it I don't feel you need to justify every prop you use as soon as you approach spectators until it becomes relevant. This is just my opinion. |

This is one of those props that the spectator 'likes' before they even know what it is.
It's one of those 'no way' moments when you eventually show what's inside. I've yet to work out a definite routine for this, but have shown it both using a playing card, and a prediction. Both examples had equally good reactions. I was working a restaurant last night, and placed it down on every table I worked at. However, I didn't show the effect to every table. When I'd finished a table, people asked 'what was the box for?', I simply told them that I didn't have an emergency, and didn't kneed to open it. This approach worked really well, as the tables in the restaurant were close together, so there were lots of spectators watching from other tables. When I did eventually get round to showing what was inside the box, it was an effect for approx 15-20 people, rather than just the ones at that particular table. Think I may use it like that again in busy restaurant situations. Hope the above makes sense!. |

Penguin has new videos up for the Clarity Box!
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/3629 Video # 2 is Backstage with Dan Harlan with David as the guest and they discuss the Clarity Box. I LOVE Dan's idea for resetting right in front of them. Video # 3 is Rick Lax and he shows using a bill and I LOVE it. He uses the Jamy Ian Swiss idea of having extra objects in the box. When you dump out the bill....the coins come out also. It leaves them no where to go or connect the dots! I'm going to set mine up as a tip jar. Zom |

I don't own this yet but my plan when I buy it is to do it with a £10 note (i'm told it'll work). I'm not big on justifying every item I use as I think magic should just be whimsical and unjustifiable sometimes. however, whilst not 100% certain on exact patter, my intention is that I will have this set up with £10 note and explain that the reactions from my magic are so good I get a lot of people swearing. So I have introduced a charity swear box (clarity box) deal is, if the swear they give me the £10 for charity. Borrow £10, get it signed, Then switch it for flash note..etc etc etc. hope this will work.
