Let me get this straight, insurance providers are so mad about the ACA being passed that they're "firing" customers in retaliation? How is that good business? Are the people they're booting high risk and likely to cost them more money in payouts than they are worth in premiums? Curiouser and curiouser...

"The law states that policies in effect as of March 23, 2010 will be “grandfathered,” meaning consumers can keep those policies even though they don’t meet requirements of the new health care law. But the Department of Health and Human Services then wrote regulations that narrowed that provision, by saying that if any part of a policy was significantly changed since that date -- the deductible, co-pay, or benefits, for example -- the policy would not be grandfathered.
Buried in Obamacare regulations from July 2010 is an estimate that because of normal turnover in the individual insurance market, “40 to 67 percent” of customers will not be able to keep their policy. And because many policies will have been changed since the key date, “the percentage of individual market policies losing grandfather status in a given year exceeds the 40 to 67 percent range.” That means the administration knew that more than 40 to 67 percent of those in the individual market would not be able to keep their plans, even if they liked them. Yet President Obama, who had promised in 2009, “if you like your health plan, you will be able to keep your health plan,” was still saying in 2012, “If [you] already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance"."

IMO, the "significantly changed" part needs clarification before one can fairly judge the earlier "lying" claim. "Most health insurance plans that existed on March 23, 2010 are eligible for grandfathered status and therefore do not have to meet all the requirements of the health care law. But if an insurer or employer makes significant changes to a plan’s benefits or how much members pay through premiums, copays or deductibles, then the plan loses that status. The government's regulations spell out how much plans can change the amount paid by workers or employers before losing their status."

As I understand it, most insurance providers that have dropped customers is because the policies don't meet the minimum requirements of Obamacare. The law is forcing them to drop the customers. 'Retaliation' is not part of the equation. |

I don't follow political policy as closely as I'd like to. Just not enough time. It's more peoples' reactions to politics that interest me because my key research area is social influence. I threw out a guess based on previous patterns of behavior from insurance companies and my guess was off the mark this time. Curious to see how it will all play out.

I actually don't even know if my student health plan is approved but I can't afford anything else (not with loans at 6.8% and tuition higher than ever) and penalties don't kick in until April so I'm not in a rush to find out.

And penalties are pretty small so not a big deterrent. But you may qualify for tax credits, etc. that make it possibly for you to get better insurance at less money than you currently have if your families income is low enough.
I think Washington is running their own website so it's also probably not experiencing anywhere near the problems of the federal website. |
