Jeff Busby was the last to dealer/manufacturer to produce this gimmick as I recall. Never purchased it as I was never impressed with the ads.

For who knows the gimmick:
I don't use the gimick and I do with seven people and I don't need to ask nothing. So think about this and who have the gimmick will not use that more. ( I'm sorry for my english its not good. I'm brazilian )

WOW!!!
Is that thread still going??? It is over a half years since I wrote that! :) Well, the Paul Fox gimmick has been buryed on the bottom of one of my drawers for a pretty loong time. Even though I guess you CAN use the same gimmick, I'm dead certain about (or at least almost) that Jeff Busby recommended another gimmick for the jumbo cards. Or maybe that just was to increase his sales. That would indeed have been very like him Sven PS; I have never used these gimmick, even though most others highly praise it. I guess I should have another look on it.

Sven, in my humble opinion, you should have another look on it.
Also, while defending Busby would be the last thing I intend to do... my package came with two different sized gimmicks (regualr and jumbo) so I don't think you needed to buy two different products. Paolo

I don't have any idea why Jeff made two different gimmicks. Unless it was so people with limited vision could read the silly thing!
Think about it. Of course, that could have just been a gimmick.

A little side light - I tried to sell mine on eBay a year or so ago and BuzzBee had the auction stopped for violation of his intellectual property rights (I bought it from him BTW).
I find him to be the single most objectionable person I've ever met (and I worked for Arthur Andersen). Now back to the topic.... |

If you do any memorized deck work you can perform the effect without the gimmick. Not an original idea of mine BTW.

IMHO there is nothing wrong with the Paul Fox Miracle gimmick. However since it's release many stronger, mind reading effects with playing cards have been released. Like most magic gimmicks it can be a miracle or a flop depending on who is using it.

Concerning the "playability" of this item before a group of people and it's potential for seeming like a "slow" routine; one only has to look at David Blaine's first TV show to see how even the simplest of effects can play big. I'm referring especially to his biting of the quarter then spitting it back on. Granted, the effect was quick and striking, but in the hands of a great performer, even the dullest of routines can create moments of astonishment that have the potential of lasting lifetimes in the memories of those who see it. Personality is EVERYTHING. An Economics teacher may be able to make an elephant disappear, but it will be the hot English teacher who can do the French drop that will have all the high school kids talking.

I have to address Aron's comment on biting the quarter. Regarding this effect, it has a huge impact on non-magic audiences and for some reason translates to astonishment status more easily than some longer, more technical routines. When I was still performing this (pre-Blaine) it was often requested by people who had witnessed it with “Show him/her the thing with the quarter!” I was amazed that the effect has such a strong impact on people. I doubt this has to do with personality as DB's is very dry and his presentation is very straightforward. What creates the astonishment, if done properly, is the fact that the coin is "borrowed", damaged and visually and instantly restored and then returned for inspection. This is one case of the effect transcending presentation. I don't mean this to become a criticism of DB's style, because I have no problem with him, he does things that work perfectly for him. I just think in this case the effect carries the trick, and not the presentation in the artistic sense of the word. When I say presentation I am referring to the idea of a story and motivation not the nuts and bolts handling.

I have the Paul Fox Miracle Gimmick and used it just a bit. I guess the main issue for me in the long run was that the method required a lengthy presentation that might not fly as easily with contemporary audiences.
As Necromancer pointed out, Richard Osterlind's Radar Deck accomplishes the same end in a much more direct and startling way. I enjoy studying the evolution of tricks and had forgottten about the Miracle Gimmick and its relationship to more contemporary approaches. Very cool. |

Pete,
I'll nominate the Paul Fox Beer Trick as described by you on GeMiNi back in June 1998: "An empty, ungaffed, beer (or coke) can is shown, and spun on a wand if you wish... it is filled with "hops" or confetti... from a small paper bag. It is covered for a moment by inverting the bag over the can. The can is actually displayed by setting it onto the foot of an upturned beer glass (the kind that are narrow at bottom and wide at top) so it is elevated and away from table, props etc. When the bag is lifted off -- and tossed aside -- the can is full of beer or soda or... and can be handed out. It is simple, clever and a baffling item."
