I have gotten my daughter a few coin gimmicks in the past. I liked the videos I have seen of the Penetration Board where you can place your hand over a quarter and it disappears, then you place your hand above the Penetration Board again and you can make it reappear.
So here’s the scoop. I ordered one online that was inexpensive, but looked nice. I received it, and when I tried it out, it worked so badly, that no matter how hard I tried to make this work, it just wouldn’t do what it was supposed to do. I am not only not going to give this to her, but I wouldn’t even try to perform with this board in front of anyone. So I basically just bought another paper weight. So here is the question, do some of these Penetration Boards actually work smoothly and look convincing? Or is it just a case where you get what you pay for? Are there any Penetration Boards someone would recommend investing in? I did read the instructions, which really isn’t complicated, so could I be doing something wrong? Thanks... |

I got an inexpensive one once and it just fell apart when the package was opened. Methinks the glue used isn't compatible with the USA. I just returned it and never tried for another. It was easier to master some new sleights than try and fix it.

All these are imports today.. These are sold as "Pitch" items. The secret to pitch selling is that "it does not work for everyone", why, because it takes a long time to learn to do it. True, import items quality varies a great deal. Smoothly is a matter of opinion. If this has been practiced with it over 100 times, is it getting easier to move the gimmick. It may just need breaking in. I bet a professional who pitches these could take yours out of your hand and blow you away with it. I have seen it done.
I notice that on eBay, they say it is for a half dollar. I have never seen this done with a half dollar, only a quarter. They may mean the gimmick is the size of a half dollar, but it is always been used with a quarter. I could not believe those prices. They have one vintage "Panel Board Penetration" on sale for just a few dollars more then the imports. You could try this, but I believe your experience will be the same. I have seen some real pitchman do this, and it looks like real magic in their hands. Of couse they do it several hundred times in just a few hours. They use to pitch these for $5, I can understand $10 today, but not over $20, would never sell. If you are really interested in mastering this, then keep working on it while you watch your favorite television show. In a few months you may begin to see some improvement. This board is not considered an easy to do or self-working trick, if it was everyone would be doing it. It takes timing and corrdination to pull this off. Just because the gimmick looks simple, does not mean the performance will be simple. |

You know who I saw do this well?
David Copperfield! It seems David saw a pitchman do this frequently when growing up in the East....and learned it. Hollywood Magic used have dozens of these lying around and David saw one and went right into the whole bit! Regards- J.Neal

Cuckoo's Nest Magic Shop sells a good coin board now. Search "magic panel board" on their website.
I also wrote a book called "The Coin Board Book." It's a 40 page, 8.5 x 11 book full of moves, routines, ideas. If you didn't know what to do with the board before, this will spark your own creativity. I think this can be one of the hottest walk around effects of the decade. PM me for details on the book.

The pitchman that David saw was Dan Tsoukalas, known affectionately as the Macy's magician. He worked the magic counter at Macy's and reportedly was the first person to ever sell David a magic trick when he was still David Kotkin from New Jersey. The most common name for the board is the Danish Panel Board and the good ones are often difficult to come by. When Dan was supplied his from Japan, he would separate the order into his firsts, seconds, and thirds. Firsts were great right out of the package, seconds would take some TLC, and thirds worked great as coasters. It is possible to sand or wax the trap if it is too tight, and I have tried wood filler when it was loose. Dan Tsoukalas pitched these, among other things like the Steel Ball and Tube, at Macy's and at conventions and is fondly remembered by all who witnessed this master of the Coin Board. On a historical note, these used to be sold with a cap that you could cover the coin with that would allow the trap to open exactly the right amount. The trick dates back to the Thirties at least. P.S. what you are watching David do in the video are moves that Dan would perform in his routine.

When I was a kid I played with, then dismissed, an effect called “The Coin Penetration Board.” Well— now as an adult it’s going back in my repertoire! All thanks to my buddy EvilDan. If you’d like to add a close-up piece that no one else is doing this could be it. Look at Copperfield’s demo link to see what it can do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqanfNI-iuU&hc_location=ufi I’ve read his new book cover-to-cover and it’s a detailed, comprehensive, and creative treatise called “The Coin Board Book.” His 40 page book brings this “$3 kid trick” to the level of a little minor miracle. Not only does it cover every possible nuance and detail of any brand of panels, it inspires the reader to reimagine the effect, and originate new ways to use an old prop. If you’d like to hear more here’s Dan’s FB page— And info. to order the book: https://www.facebook.com/psychicsideshow Terelmes Publishing’s “The Coin Board Book” $20.00 plus $4.00 postage. The question remains, does anyone make a really quality board.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

This item has always been a Pitch item only. It was originally made in places like Hong Kong. Back in the 1950's and 1960's, it was a very well made product. That only sold for like a dollar or two. That was a lot of money back then. Now that India is making them, their wood is not so desirable, warps very easily.
I have not looked at all the custom wood manufacturers that make those trick one inch boxes for three to five hundred dollars. But then, why make a board, for a $200 when you can make a box for $500, that is almost self working. Anyway, to find a pitchman to make the DVD would be kind of hard these days. If they are pitching they are making income. Usually, no one has mastered the board but the professional pitchman. I would venture to say, there is not many to none that have ever mastered the board after purchase. I have seen a few of these in the day, it takes more practice then most people are willing to put into it. Most just wind up in the bottom of a drawer. That is what "Pitch Item" means, fantastic looking magic trick, looks easy to do, so it will sell. When it fact it does take some or a lot of work and practice, so the grand kids never get to see grandpa show them vanishing and appearing quarter. To further comment on pitch items, there were usually not instructions, the pitchman described how it worked and how you can do it in the pitch. So by the time you got home, you forgot how to do it. If there were any instructions, they were only a sentence or two and it was intentionally worded so you could not understand it. Pitch items are intentionally made to get your money out of your pocket. If you come back next year to complain, the guy most likely has another item to sell you. Of course he will show you how the board was worked again, but he will not spend the time away from selling, and making his living. |

Yes! The old sidewalk pitchman's "motto" was: "Never give a mark, a 'worker'!"
The late Stan KRAMIEN wore a solid gold mouse (with diamonds for eyes!)as a bolo tie. Stan pitched the mouse in his show.

Nice spit-shine on that Dan. And you really do it very well. I certainly had one in my day, wish I had your ebook back then.
On a relative note, this making of something old, sorta NEW again reminds me of I think Mike Gallo's rejuvenation of the old plastic cup & ball trick. Man, he made that old thing hum! Turned it into a whole routine.
