Well I've had Luke Jermay's Book for a short while now and have thoroughly enjoyed it all.
It's odd (to me) reading about how people are saying that the "Out of this World" effect is difficult to pull off, as it's the one that instantly struck me as being the most fun and quickest to get started doing. But then I'm awful at doing anything that involves sleight of hand or tricky preparation, so *anything* that involves just getting a deck of cards and doing it, is good in my books. I've posted my handling of Luke's "Out of this World" in another thread (not giving away any methods I must add) if anyone's interested, as, I believe, it gives you a "safe" way of practicing it, when used on smallish groups. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......15&0 Remote Castle is a beautiful effect and one I cant wait to try out, although I've got to figure out *where* to try it out I'm also really hoping for snow and ice this winter so I can try out the bendy leaf lines effect (which I've *obviously* forgotten the name of and don't have the book at hand ) but hopefully using ice from the top of a puddle. Once I've tested it to see if it can work with ice before it melts, and bringing the coldness of the ice into the effect. Then moving onto a variation of the Ice Man effect, using a snowball instead of a box (or another frozen puddle I guess, but that takes planning!). Anyway, the books a great buy, and of course the sum is greater than the part's. Cheers Rev Dan Catt

Just got it and read it. I'm sure I will read it a few more times. Excellent thinking and effects! It made me feel proud that I have already been using similar ideas and presentations within my own sets.
I really liked the shadow stuff and know I can use some of it within my own shadow routine. The Stigmata effect should kick some serious A-S-S when presented at the right time. I can also see Remote Castle being used by some within their acts because it should get some good reactions. Once again, a really good book with more than just effects to stimulate you to think about what you are doing. Thanks, Luke, for putting it out there. Greg P.S. I've always done many of the "sensation" effects you've talked about when doing my coin bend, but I will now throw in the pulse idea.

I've just read "Remote Castle" , and two questions came to my mind :
1- Ramsay, Quote:
I recently used the very same method to show my "RV" skills by having a spectator throw a deck of the top of a building. I'd like to know what happened next ? I mean, when the effect is over, you're not very "clean" with the cards. For a stage show , it's not important, but when your spectator was alone with the cards didn't he take a look ? 2- Same kind of question, but for the beginning of the effect, with the card castle : if a spectator is near the castle (to blow it), I don't understand why he doesn't see the arrangement (for instance, the 2 cards on the top ; isn't it obvious ?)

Ok. Lets deal with each issue seperatly.
I fully knew that the spectator might have looked at the cards on the floor. I had no way of knowing whether they would or not. However this was for the producers or a documentary on mind reading and they had already looked into "mentalism" a great deal (to the point of attending lectures and conventions and buying books and DVD's etc) they knew a little and we even had a few chats about methodology of some things - they both had personal interests in mind reading from their magic background. So I figured the risk was worth it. Also the guy on the other end of the phone was busy checking what I said. This was done as we walked down the stairs. Secondly. As long as the spectator is stood to one side of the card castle then you are fine. I always stand my spectator to the left of the castle. In this way it is impossible for them to see both sides of the castle. I also angle the table very slightly to the left. Hope this helps, Luke Jermay. |

No problem.
Building Blocks will be my last mass release book for a while. I have 2 DVD's coming out pretty soon and an 2 effects after which I will not been putting much out for a while on a mass scale - so I want to make sure there are no misunderstandings or problems with Building Blocks. Luke Jermay. |

Taking a break, may I point out that you can use the psychology behind the effect known as "Force of Thought" in conjuction with Luke's book test.

So there's nothing bad about this book? Nothing that could have been explained better? People have done the effects and the methods have worked 100% of the time?
Glowing reviews after owning a book for 2 days are nice but has anyone got some personal opinions?, comparisons with other work? detailed information? and dare I say...criticism for us? |

Well, Neil, if you are looking for mental magic that works 100% of the time and you can do over the phone then this book is not for you.
This book is about ideas that need you to be on your toes when performing. This book is about subtle verbal and physical controls that do not deal with a deck of cards, but with your spectators. If you feel that trying to influence your spectators to think or go in certain directions, and not always be right is a bad thing then this book is not for you. If you feel that making something physically change in someone's hand or as they are viewing it requires a gimmick or tricked up object then this book is not for you. The book is like the The Twilight Zone... is about a dimension of time & space, of things and ideas, of shadows & lights. I loved this book for many reasons and probably those reasons will be hated by others. This book is not for everyone... thankfully. Greg

This book was not meant for everyone either, hence the more "deep" nature of the writing...some will love and use the ideas others will feel cheated and think they can not be done.
I get something of a kick out of performing at conventions and such and proving that the material actually works...it makes me smile. Click Here! :) Luke Jermay. |
